Extra stop OK to save money? IC from FRA Fernbahnhof
IC long-distance trains run from Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof, a separate station next to Terminal 1 with direct platforms for intercity routes across Germany. If ICE doesn’t serve your destination directly, IC often fills the gap with through trains to mid-sized cities that would otherwise need a change.
At FRA, follow signs specifically to Fernbahnhof, not just “Züge/Trains,” because IC uses the long-distance hall above the A/Z check-in area in Terminal 1, while S-Bahn and Regionalbahn use the separate Regionalbahnhof one level below. New arrivals regularly walk to the wrong station and have to backtrack 5–10 minutes.
IC tickets from the airport to cities like Kassel, Münster, or Oldenburg often price out €5–€20 cheaper than the fastest ICE on the same day, especially if you grab a Sparpreis in advance. Deutsche Bahn treats IC and ICE the same for through-tickets from FRA, so a single ticket covers both train and any required connection.
Most IC services at FRA run at least once every 1–2 hours on key north–south and east–west routes, and many are locomotive-hauled sets with standard and 1st class. Seat reservations on IC cost about €4–€5 and are optional, but for late-afternoon departures between 16:00 and 19:00 they’re worth it if you’re hauling checked bags from a long-haul flight.
Inside IC coaches you usually get 2+2 seating in 2nd class, some six-seat compartments, luggage racks at the ends of the car, and overhead shelves big enough for a 55 cm carry-on. Speisewagen or Bordbistro on IC varies by route; when present, expect basic hot dishes under €10 and coffee around €3.
Regulars pull up both ICE and IC options in the DB Navigator app or on bahn.de for trips from Frankfurt Airport, then sort by “Duration” and “Cheapest price” rather than picking by train type. Since IC and ICE from FRA both depart the Fernbahnhof, swapping between them usually just means a different platform number on the same concourse.
Final tip: build at least a 60–90 minute buffer between scheduled flight arrival and IC departure if you’re landing from outside the Schengen Area into Terminal 1 or 2, since passport control and the SkyLine ride to Terminal 1 can easily eat 30–45 minutes before you even reach the Fernbahnhof.
