AITRAM taxis line up directly outside FNC’s T1 arrivals
Metered AITRAM Táxi cars wait at the signed taxi rank just outside the Terminal 1 (T1) arrivals hall at Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, usually 20–30 meters from the main exit doors. This is the official Madeira taxi cooperative a lot of hotels mention by name when they tell guests to “take an AITRAM cab from the airport” for predictable fares. You don’t need to prebook for daytime arrivals; cars generally queue in front of the terminal from around 06:00 until after the last scheduled flight lands.
A standard AITRAM Táxi ride from FNC to central Funchal runs roughly 20 minutes in light traffic to cover the 18–20 km coastal drive. Daytime fares on the meter usually land around €25–€35 to Funchal city hotels, with higher totals late at night, on Sundays, or with heavy luggage surcharges. Drivers are required to use the meter under Madeira rules, so you should see the starting flagfall amount appear as soon as you sit down and give the address.
AITRAM Táxi uses licensed city cabs, often painted in the light blue-and-yellow Madeira scheme, and each car carries an official taxi license plate and roof sign. You’ll typically find regular sedans at the rank, with the occasional larger vehicle that can handle more luggage or 4 passengers with checked bags. For anything bigger than 4 people, most groups pre-arrange a van transfer instead of trying to split across two taxis at the rank.
Payment on AITRAM Táxi is usually in euros cash, and many—but not all—drivers accept cards, so ask “cartão?” before setting off if you need to pay by credit card. The ride from FNC to places just past Funchal, like Câmara de Lobos, often pushes fares toward €35–€40, and trips to the far west or north of the island can go €60–€80 or more. Always take a printed hotel address or a phone screenshot; some smaller guesthouses outside central Funchal don’t have big signs on the street.
Step-by-step: using AITRAM Táxi from FNC T1
- 1. After landing at FNC, follow the “Saída/Exit” signs through baggage claim in Terminal 1 and pass through customs into the public arrivals hall.
- 2. Walk straight out the main sliding doors; within about 30 seconds you’ll see the signed taxi rank on the curb directly in front of the terminal.
- 3. Join the taxi line if there is one and wait for an AITRAM Táxi from the front of the queue; look for the official roof sign and license plate.
- 4. Tell the driver your destination and confirm “meter” and approximate price, for example “Funchal centro, quanto mais ou menos?”—expect to hear something in the €25–€35 range.
- 5. Load luggage into the trunk, check that the meter is running as you depart, and keep small notes (like €5 and €10) handy for payment plus a tip if you like.
- 6. On arrival, verify the total shown on the meter, pay in cash or card as agreed, ask for a printed receipt if your company needs one, and double-check the back seat for passports or phones before the car pulls away.
One last tip: if someone inside the terminal tries to steer you away from the signed rank to an unmarked car, walk the extra 20 meters to the official AITRAM Táxi line instead.
