Eight gates, one checkpoint, and almost no walking at EYW

The Main Terminal at Key West International Airport runs on a simple layout: one central security checkpoint feeds just 8 gates, all within a few minutes’ walk. American, Delta, JetBlue, Silver, and United all use this same compact space, so there’s no guessing which concourse to follow or which terminal to enter.

Despite the small footprint, the airport’s own guidance says to arrive at least 2 hours before departure, even for short hops to Miami or Fort Lauderdale. That tells you the real slowdowns sit at check-in and TSA, not in walking time. There’s a single main entrance for departures, so you’re never more than a few dozen steps from the check-in counters for all 5 airlines.

Post-security, the 8 gates line up along one short corridor, so you can see most of the seating area from almost any point. There are no catalogued full-service restaurants, branded lounges, or big-name shops here, so plan to eat and stock up on anything special before you reach EYW. Prices on basic grab-and-go items locals mention in reviews tend to run higher than in town, which is typical for a small island airport.

On the arrivals side, baggage claim issues come up in multiple Tripadvisor threads, including one report where a flight with only 16 passengers had no bags come out at all. With that in mind, avoid tight ground transfers; leave a buffer of 45–60 minutes between landing time and anything you book in town, especially boat trips or pre-paid excursions in Key West.

Regulars who fly in and out several times a year say they still follow the 2-hour rule for departures, regardless of season. That means hitting the airport around 7:00 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. flight or 3:00 p.m. for a 5:00 p.m. departure, even though the walk from security to the furthest gate is only a couple of minutes.

Watch out for bottlenecks at the single security checkpoint when several departures bunch up within the same 60–90 minute window. With American, Delta, JetBlue, Silver, and United all able to schedule departures close together, the queue can back up fast and there’s no alternate lane or second checkpoint to bail you out.

One practical tip: eat and shop in town on Duval Street or along Roosevelt Boulevard, then arrive at EYW with a printed or mobile boarding pass about 2 hours before your flight so you can go straight to check-in (if needed) and security, then sit near your specific gate number rather than hoping for extra services that simply don’t exist in this small Main Terminal.
