Uber-style apps in Ankara still drop you into a yellow taxi
At Esenboğa (ESB), opening Uber or BiTaksi at 02:00 doesn’t summon a private fleet; by law in Ankara you ride in standard yellow taxis even when you book through an app. Reddit users in r/Turkey point out that unlike Istanbul’s Uber‑taxi setup, Ankara has no separate Uber-branded cars or pre-set app fares.
The airport taxi rank sits directly outside the arrivals level, about a 1–2 minute walk from baggage claim exit doors 9–10. Local taxi cooperatives control this rank, and Redditors note that drivers waiting there usually take passengers in queue order instead of accepting app calls from the curb. That means your BiTaksi or similar app request often gets ignored at ESB.
Metered fares from ESB into central Ankara (Kızılay) typically run in the 350–450 TRY range in 2024, depending on traffic on the 28–30 km route via D200. Because Ankara doesn’t show upfront pricing like Istanbul’s UberTaxi, r/Turkey users complain they can’t see a fare estimate or locked-in route before they get in the car. You’re back to watching the meter and checking the map yourself.
Apps like BiTaksi and Martı Tag still work better inside the city than at the airport; locals on Reddit say they often pay by card in-app once they’ve reached districts such as Çankaya or Çayyolu. From ESB, though, those same locals usually just join the taxi line and pay cash or card directly to the driver, then switch to app‑booked taxis only after their first drop-off.
Watch out for drivers who offer a “fixed price” from ESB to Kızılay that’s well above 450 TRY, especially late at night between 23:00 and 05:00. Check that the meter is on within the first 1–2 minutes; if it isn’t, calmly ask for “taksimetre, lütfen” and be ready to step out at the first safe spot near the terminal loop if the driver refuses.
Practical tip: before you leave the arrivals hall, open Google Maps or Yandex Maps, plot your hotel, screenshot the recommended route via the O-20 or D200, and keep your phone visible in the front seat so the driver sees you know the general direction and expected distance in kilometers.
