Gate-side in T1, Alembic is the main sit-down bar
Alembic sits airside in Terminal 1 at East Midlands Airport, a short walk from most gates in this compact terminal. It’s the airport’s local-style bar, so if you want an actual table and a pint instead of grabbing cans from WHSmith, this is the spot. You clear security first, then reach Alembic in under 5 minutes in normal queues.
The focus here is beer and simple pub food, with draft options typically including at least one local or regional ale alongside standard lagers. Expect airport pricing: around £6–£7 for a pint and £10–£15 for mains like burgers, fish and chips, or sandwiches. Food is ordered at the bar, and they bring plates to the table, which speeds things up if you’re watching a 45–60 minute boarding window.
Seating runs along the concourse windows, so you get views of the EMA apron and runway movements while you eat. Tables are fairly close together and it does fill up during the morning and early evening peaks when multiple Ryanair and Jet2 departures bunch around the 06:00–08:00 and 17:00–20:00 banks. Solo travelers can usually squeeze onto a bar stool even when regular tables are taken.
Food comes out in roughly 15–25 minutes for most orders, depending on how many flights are boarding. That’s workable for a 90-minute pre-departure arrival but starts to feel tight if you hit the bar with less than 40 minutes to go. Menu standards lean heavy and fried; vegetarians normally get at least one burger or salad option, but this isn’t a plant-based specialist.
Staff start shutting the kitchen earlier than final bar service on quiet nights, especially after the last departures around 21:00–22:00, so don’t rely on a hot meal with a very late flight. Practical tip: if your gate is shown as “TBA” on the screens, sit near the front of Alembic so you can spot updates without having to move mid-pint.
