Matatu Minibuses Entebbe–Kampala

Minibus

Minibus Around 30 min airport–city centre by bus in ideal conditions as stated by a shuttle information page; likely longer in practice due to stops and traffic.[2]

30-minute bus claims, but matatus usually take longer

Shuttle info sites talk about a 30-minute Entebbe–Kampala bus ride, but matatu regulars say you should plan for traffic, stops, and a much slower run than private cars on the same 40 km corridor. These are shared 14–20 seat minibuses on the main road, not a dedicated airport coach.

The catch is that matatus don’t drive into the Main Terminal at Entebbe International Airport. You first need a short taxi or boda ride, usually 10–15 minutes, from the terminal down to Entebbe town or the main road, then pick up a minibus heading toward Kampala. That step alone kills this option if you’re very tight on time or loaded with bags.

On the road, every matatu stop between Entebbe and Kampala adds minutes. Theoretical bus time is 30 minutes, but with the fill‑and‑go model and city traffic, you’re realistically looking at 45–90 minutes airport–city door to door once you include the transfer from the terminal. Treat anything under an hour as a good run.

There’s no fixed timetable; matatus leave when they’re full, which can mean 5–25 minutes of waiting in Entebbe town, longer late at night. A Uganda shuttle page literally says you can “take any bus in the direction of Kampala,” and that’s basically the rule: watch the front signboard, ask for “Kampala,” and pay the same flat fare locals do, usually quoted in Ugandan shillings cash.

Common complaints in Uganda forums: crowding and unpredictable departure times. Peak hours pack every seat and aisle; off‑peak the minibus can sit half‑empty for ages before leaving. With a checked bag plus carry‑on you’ll be miserable; this is better with a backpack and maybe one small daypack at your feet.

Regulars often run matatus only between Entebbe town and Kampala, then use a short private taxi or rideshare for the last 10–15 minutes to or from the Main Terminal. Do the same: take a cab from the terminal to Entebbe town, then swap to a matatu for the long leg to save money while keeping the most airport‑sensitive part predictable.

One tip: if your flight leaves in under 3 hours, skip matatus and pay for a direct car; the savings aren’t worth sweating check‑in and immigration at Entebbe.
