Local craft beer actually on tap at DUR

Zululand Brewing Company sits airside in the departures area at King Shaka International Airport (DUR), giving you a shot at South African craft beer without leaving security. It runs standard flight-bank hours, opening early enough to catch morning domestic departures and usually trading through the final evening waves. Expect the usual airport uplift on prices: a draft runs higher than in town, but still in the R55–R75 range depending on style and pour size.

The focus is beer under the Zululand Brewing label, brewed up the North Coast, with at least one pale ale or lager almost always on tap. Rotating options pop up, so ask what’s pouring before defaulting to bottles. If you want a quick taste of local production before flying to Johannesburg or Cape Town, this is one of the only spots in DUR that isn’t pouring just SAB macros.

Food is basic bar fare: burgers, chips, and snack plates that land in the R90–R160 bracket. Nothing here competes with a city restaurant, but it works for a 40–60 minute sit-down near your gate. Service pace tracks how busy the departures hall is; at peak afternoon departures around 15:00–18:00, give yourself at least 25 minutes from order to pay if you’re boarding from the nearby domestic gates.

Seating is open to the concourse and you can usually keep line of sight to the main FIDS screens within about 30 metres. There are a handful of bar stools with power outlets underneath; grab those first if you need to charge a laptop or phone while you drink. Noise level climbs with the departure bank, so this is better for a casual beer than a Teams call.

Practical tip: ask upfront which beers are actually from Zululand Brewing and which are just standard big-brand taps; then start with a tasting-size pour or the lightest lager if you still have a long flight ahead.
