Shuttles run every few minutes from both McNamara and Evans

The Rental Car Shuttle at DTW runs 24/7 from outside both the McNamara and Evans terminals, taking you to the consolidated Rental Car Center in about 5–10 minutes. Pickups are at the Ground Transportation level, and you’ll see blue-and-white signs marked “Rental Car Shuttle.” Buses are free, run continuously, and serve all on-airport agencies from one stop at the center on Lucas Drive.

At McNamara, follow signs to Ground Transportation, then exit near doors 402–406 on the Departures level or down to the Arrivals curb, where rental shuttles share space with hotel and off-airport buses. At Evans, head down to the Ground Transportation level near doors 200–206, where multiple shuttle bays are numbered; look for the bay labeled specifically for rental cars. If in doubt, ask the curbside agent in the safety vest; they usually know the exact door and lane.

The ride to the Rental Car Center usually takes under 10 minutes, but during peak banks for Delta around 7–9 a.m. and 4–6 p.m. it can hit 15 minutes with stops and traffic exiting I-94. The shuttle drops you at the main entrance where Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, and Thrifty share a multi-level garage. Return shuttles back to both terminals leave from the same curb where you were dropped off, with buses marked “McNamara” or “Evans.”

With luggage, give yourself 30 minutes from gate to rental counter in McNamara and 25–35 minutes in Evans, including the walk, possible wait, and the shuttle ride. On return, start the shuttle back to the airport at least 90 minutes before a domestic flight and 2 hours before an international departure to allow time for check-in and security. If you’re tight on time, skip topping off fuel near Merriman Road and head straight to the Rental Car Center, since on-site refueling can add another 10–15 minutes.

Practical tip: In winter, DTW shuttles can bunch up during snow operations, so if you land between 4 and 7 p.m., plan for a 15–20 minute wait outside and keep gloves handy in your carry-on before stepping to the curb.
