Recliners, snacks, and a quiet room beat Evans gate seating
The USO Lounge sits landside in the Evans Terminal at Detroit Metro (DTW), just past the main ticketing area, and serves active-duty military, Guard, Reserve, and their families at no charge. You check in with your ID at the front desk, then step away from the terminal noise before security. If you have a layover connecting from McNamara to Evans, factor in the terminal transfer and plan to arrive here at least 90 minutes before your next departure to keep stress low.
Hours vary with flight schedules, but recent reports show doors usually open from early morning into the evening, roughly 06:00 to 20:00 on busy days. Because this lounge is landside, you can use it even before checking bags or after arriving at Evans and meeting family at baggage claim 1–6. Just remember you still need time to clear the single Evans security checkpoint afterward, which can run 20–30 minutes during 06:30–09:00 and late-afternoon peaks.
Food is simple but free: pre-packaged snacks, chips, granola bars, and soda stocked in coolers, plus coffee and hot water at the self-serve drink station. You won’t find a full hot buffet or bar here, so plan on grabbing a proper meal in the Evans food court near gates D6–D12 if you want something substantial. The lounge works best as a place to recharge, not replace lunch or dinner on a long travel day.
Seating runs more like a community room than a business lounge, with recliners, armchairs, and a TV area instead of cubicles. There are a few tables for laptops and forms, plus standard 110V outlets scattered along the walls and power strips beside some chairs. Wi‑Fi runs off the airport’s free network, which typically gives 5–10 Mbps downstream near the center of the room, enough for email, messaging, and a short video call home.
Families get space to spread out: kids can watch TV or play quietly without worrying about gate-area side‑eye, and there’s usually room to stack a couple of carry‑ons near your seats. Because it’s landside, this is also one of the calmer places in Evans to regroup after a redeye into DTW, especially for those arriving on early Spirit or Southwest flights that hit the terminal around 05:00–07:00.
Tip: if your flight departs from an Evans D gate, leave the USO Lounge about 40 minutes before boarding time to clear security, walk to gates D8–D26, and still hit the restroom or refill your water bottle on the way.
