Bus C41 links Dortmund Airport to Holzwickede and Unna

Bus C41 runs from Dortmund Airport (T1, arrivals level) to Holzwickede and Unna, filling the gap for smaller towns that don’t have their own airport rail stop. The line is a standard VRR public bus, not an airport special, so you pay normal local fares rather than a premium ticket. It mainly helps if you live in places like Unna, Opherdicke, or other villages east of the runway and want a direct bus instead of backtracking via Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, which sits about 13–15 km away.

The stop sits directly in front of the terminal, signed as the airport bus station, with C41 usually boarding at the same bays as other regional lines. Buses run every 20–60 minutes depending on time of day, with tighter headways in weekday peaks and thinner service late evenings and on Sundays. A typical ride to Unna takes around 20–25 minutes, while shorter hops to Holzwickede come in closer to 10–15 minutes. Check the DSW21 or VRR timetable before you land if you’re arriving after 22:00, because last departures can shift with seasonal schedules.

Tickets follow VRR zones; from Dortmund Airport to Unna you’re usually looking at a single ticket in the lower zone price bracket, often under €5 as of recent schedules. You can buy from the driver in cash (carry coins and small notes under €20), from VRR vending machines at major stations like Dortmund Hbf, or in the VRR/DSW21 apps before you fly. If your trip continues by train from Unna or Holzwickede, a combined VRR ticket covering both bus and rail legs can be cheaper than separate segments, especially on day tickets that allow several trips in the same zones.

If you’re using C41 as a feeder into the rail network, Unna station gives you regional trains toward Hamm and Soest, while Holzwickede connects you back toward Dortmund Hbf in roughly 15–20 minutes by train. That pairing (bus plus RE/RB train) often beats a pure bus itinerary time-wise for distances over 25–30 km. Build in at least 10–15 minutes between bus arrival and train departure at Unna or Holzwickede to cover minor traffic delays on the approach roads south of the A44.

One tip: if your flight arrives around the top of the hour, walk straight from baggage claim to the bus bays; missing a C41 departure can mean a 30–60 minute wait depending on the timetable band.
