Real sit-down food after DSM security, not just snack towers

Portermill Craft Food & Beer sits airside in Terminal 1, past security, and runs from 5:00 a.m. until about 30 minutes before the last flight. In a terminal this small, it’s basically the only full-service spot where you can sit, order, and get a real plate of food instead of a prewrapped sandwich.

Menu is local-leaning American: burgers in the low teens, flatbreads, salads, and a tap list built around Iowa and regional beers. Drafts run several dollars higher than in town, and the overall price tier lands at $$$, very much “airport-high” instead of downtown Des Moines. Figure a burger and a beer will push you into the mid-$20s before tip.

Food quality gets called “average but fine” by regulars, with burgers and flatbreads mentioned most often as the safe orders. More elaborate plates and some appetizers show up in reviews as hit-or-miss, so if you only have time or budget for one thing, stick to a straightforward cheeseburger and a local draft. That combo is what repeat DSM flyers say they default to before an evening departure bank.

Service is the trade-off here. Multiple reviews mention only one bartender covering the entire bar and floor, which means ticket times can hit 25–30 minutes when several flights out of Terminal 1 board around the same time. Seating also fills up quickly; people end up standing around the bar rail waiting for a two-top to free up during that early evening crunch.

What regulars do: grab a bar stool instead of a table, since the bartender tends to take bar orders faster when short-staffed. If you land in the concourse with under 40 minutes to boarding, this is more of a “beer only” stop. Practical move: clear security, walk straight to Portermill, and order as soon as you sit so your food shows up before your DSM gate starts preboarding.
