Three-minute walk, mainly for rental cars, not long-term parking

The Rental Car Lot at DSM sits right across from Terminal 1, about a 3-minute walk door to door. It’s a surface lot laid out for on-airport rental agencies, so think quick pickup and drop-off, not parking your own car for a 4-day trip.

Most major agencies line the curb directly opposite the terminal doors, feeding into this surface rental lot. Stalls are clearly marked by company, so you follow the agency sign rather than hunting for a generic section. For personal parking at Des Moines International, the airport pushes you toward the main garage and economy lots instead of this area.

This lot stays open whenever flights operate, so late arrivals around 11 p.m. can still walk their keys back to the counter or drop box. Because it’s only a few hundred feet from check-in, you won’t be waiting on a shuttle or adding 10–15 minutes of bus time on departure or return.

Regular renters mention snapping a quick phone photo of their stall number and agency sign before walking to the terminal. DSM’s rental return aisles are compact, and during peak morning banks around 6–8 a.m. traffic can back up a bit while cars stack in the same narrow lanes.

Watch out in winter: reviews call out that this is largely an uncovered surface lot. During snow or freezing rain, you may end up loading bags into a wet or snow‑covered car, and scraping windows in the open at 10°F is nobody’s favorite pre-flight task.

Tip: if you’re flying out of DSM and renting, drop passengers and bags at the terminal curb first, then loop to the Rental Car Lot to return the vehicle and walk the last 3 minutes with just your carry-on.
