A4 bus runs straight from DMK to Khao San/Old Town

The BMTA A4 bus runs from Don Mueang (Terminals 1 and 2) to Khao San Road and Rambuttri for about 50 THB, so it undercuts a 250+ THB taxi by a lot if you’re solo with a backpack. It’s aimed more at locals than tourists, but backpackers use it as the cheap straight shot into Old Town guesthouses and hostels.

Journey time shows as 40–45 minutes on paper, but Reddit users report runs closer to 70–90 minutes when traffic around Democracy Monument and Khao San clogs up, especially after 17:00 and on weekends. Frequency is roughly every 10–15 minutes in the daytime, then stretches out at night; after 21:00 people report waiting 30+ minutes at the curb outside DMK arrivals.

The stop at DMK sits on the main road outside the terminal; follow the “Public Bus” signs from Terminal 1 or 2 and look for the A4 sign on the shelter. You pay onboard in cash (small notes and coins, assume around 50 THB) to the conductor, not the driver. Seating gets tight when locals plus backpackers with 60–70L packs pile on from the airport and later city stops.

The route runs DMK → Vibhavadi Rangsit Road → Victory Monument area → Ratchadamnoen → Democracy Monument → Khao San/Rambuttri and then continues beyond, so you need to track where you are. Google reviewers say it “drops you right by Khao San/Rambuttri,” but posters warn that the bus carries on past Democracy Monument, so ask the conductor for “Khao San” and watch your map once you see the monument.

Don’t expect tourist-style support: there are limited or no English audio announcements, and the signs inside the bus skew Thai-first. Comments mention that standing is common for at least 20–30 minutes when the bus fills between DMK and central Bangkok, so keep heavier bags on the floor and not in the aisle to avoid blocking people.

Step-by-step from DMK to Khao San with A4:

  • 1. After exiting arrivals in Terminal 1 or 2, follow the “Public Bus” signs to the main road in front of the airport; allow 5–10 minutes to walk out.
  • 2. Find the bus stop signed for BMTA airport buses and look specifically for bus A4 on the route board or digital sign; if in doubt, ask staff “A4 Khao San?”
  • 3. When the A4 arrives (aim for daytime, roughly every 10–15 minutes), board through the front or middle door and take a seat quickly if you see one free.
  • 4. Pay the conductor in cash when they come down the aisle; have around 50 THB ready in small bills, then keep the paper ticket they hand you.
  • 5. Open Google Maps and watch the route as you pass Victory Monument and then Democracy Monument; after Democracy Monument, get ready to get off near Khao San/Rambuttri.
  • 6. Press the stop button once you see Khao San Road, Rambuttri, or your guesthouse alley on the map, then step off and walk the last 200–500 meters to your hostel.

Tip: landing in the 17:00–20:00 peak and on a clock? Use A1 or A2 to Mo Chit (about 30 THB, 20–30 minutes) plus BTS/MRT, then finish with a short 60–100 THB taxi to Khao San instead of sitting an extra 40–50 minutes on a packed A4.
