A Line park-and-ride

Seven-minute A Line ride beats DEN’s on-airport parking rates

61st and Peña Station Park-n-Ride is an RTD A Line lot one stop before Denver International Airport, with a train ride of about 7–10 minutes into the DEN station. This is a budget play: RTD daily fees for out-of-district plates often undercut on-airport lots at the Jeppesen Terminal, especially on week-long trips.

This is an open RTD park-n-ride lot, not official DIA parking, so think “commuter rail” setup. You park at 61st & Peña, pay the RTD parking fee if your car is registered outside the district, then buy a Regional or Airport fare for the A Line. The walk at DEN from the rail platform through the hotel/transit center into Jeppesen Terminal usually takes 5–8 minutes.

Train time is short, but headways matter: during peak hours the A Line can run every 15 minutes, and late at night gaps can stretch past 20 minutes. One Reddit user with kids called out that wait specifically, so for red-eyes or very early flights you want to check the schedule and pad at least one extra train into your plan.

Security is the trade-off. Multiple r/denver posts mention limited or inconsistent overnight security at 61st & Peña, including occasional break-in reports. Regulars park under or near brighter lighting closer to the station entrance, avoid leaving anything visible in the car, and feel fine for 1–3 nights but get nervous beyond that.

Luggage is the other pain point. The A Line cars can be crowded during rush hours from downtown Denver, and rolling a 50 lb checked bag through a busy train at 7:30 a.m. is nobody’s favorite. If you’re carrying skis in January, remember snow and ice in the lot aren’t always cleared quickly, so give yourself extra time to dig out and walk carefully.

Regulars keep it simple: they preload an RTD MyRide card or app at home, park, walk straight to the platform, tap in, then ride the 7–10 minutes to DEN. One tip: for late-night returns, screenshot the A Line schedule and aim for a specific train so kids aren’t stuck shivering at the airport rail platform.
