Cozumel–Playa del Carmen Ferry Connection

Boat to mainland

Boat to mainland

30–45 minutes separates CZM’s arrivals curb from Playa del Carmen

If you’re splitting a week between Cozumel and the Riviera Maya, the Cozumel–Playa del Carmen Ferry Connection is your link to the mainland. From Cozumel International Airport (CZM), it’s roughly a 10–15 minute taxi ride (about 90–150 MXN) to the Cozumel ferry pier downtown. The crossing to Playa del Carmen then takes about 30–45 minutes by high-speed passenger boat, depending on sea conditions and operator.

Boats run from the main Cozumel pier to Playa del Carmen’s Fundadores Park pier, which sits a few hundred meters from 5th Avenue and the ADO bus station. Tickets usually start around 250–300 MXN one way for adults, with children’s fares discounted by roughly 30–40%. You buy tickets at the pier kiosks or online from the two main ferry companies that typically split the departures through the day.

The ferry terminal on the Cozumel side sits in San Miguel, about 3.5–4 km from CZM. Taxis at the airport work on fixed zone pricing; expect to pay the posted rate for “muelle/ferry” on the shared price board by the official taxi desk. The pier area has basic seating, a few snack stands, and restrooms that usually charge 5–10 MXN, so keep some small coins ready.

On the water, crossing time averages 40 minutes in normal weather, but winter nortes and summer squalls can add 10–15 minutes or cause short delays. Boats have indoor air‑conditioned seating and an open deck up top; seas can be choppy, so bring motion sickness tablets if you’re sensitive. Luggage goes in designated racks or under your seat; larger checked-style suitcases are allowed but you carry them yourself on and off the boat.

From Playa del Carmen, it’s a 5–7 minute walk (about 450–600 meters) from the pier to the ADO bus station on 5th Avenue for onward buses to Cancún Airport (CUN), Tulum, or Mérida. Shared vans (colectivos) to Tulum line up along Calle 2 and Avenida 20, roughly 8–10 minutes on foot. Private transfers prebooked online often meet you directly at the Playa del Carmen pier barrier with a sign.

Step-by-step: Cozumel Airport to Playa del Carmen

  • 1. Clear immigration and customs at CZM; this can take 10–40 minutes depending on arrivals.
  • 2. Exit the terminal and walk past the time-share desks to the official taxi booth just outside the doors.
  • 3. Ask specifically for a ride to “Muelle de transbordadores a Playa” and pay the posted fare (usually under 200 MXN for one to two people).
  • 4. Ride 10–15 minutes into town and get dropped near the ferry pier on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar.
  • 5. Buy ferry tickets for the next departure at the company kiosks; aim to arrive at least 20–30 minutes before departure.
  • 6. Queue at the boarding gate when your sailing is called, then walk the gangway and stow larger bags where crew directs.
  • 7. After the 30–45 minute crossing, disembark in Playa del Carmen and follow signs up the pier ramp toward 5th Avenue.

Build the buffer: for a same-day connection from CZM arrival to a bus or transfer in Playa del Carmen, give yourself at least 3 hours door to door.
