CATS Route 5 Airport is the rock-bottom cost option between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and uptown. It runs from the Main terminal’s upper curb (Departures level) to the Transit Center at Charlotte Transportation Center in uptown, using regular city buses with front-door boarding and a standard CATS farebox. You pay the same fare as any local route, so this undercuts a $25–$40 Lyft or Uber by a huge margin if you’re solo.
The route operates on a published CATS schedule, generally in daytime and evening hours, with service every 30–60 minutes depending on time of day. Buses stop at signed CATS stops on the upper roadway outside the Main terminal; look for “Route 5 Airport” on the electronic headsign near the windshield. Typical run time from CLT to uptown lands in the 25–45 minute range, but it can stretch longer in rush hour around I-77 and the city center.
Fares are paid on board in cash or via CATS passes, using the same structure as other CATS routes; that keeps your one-way ticket in the low single digits instead of double-digit shuttle prices. The driver does not make change, so bring $1 bills or a preloaded pass. There’s no upcharge for luggage, but you’ll share space with regular commuters, CLT airline staff in uniform, and airport workers riding in and out of shifts.
Route 5 ends at the Charlotte Transportation Center, a few blocks from the LYNX Blue Line’s CTC/Arena station and near Trade & Tryon. If you’re heading to a hotel at the convention center or the Spectrum Center, you can walk the 0.3–0.5 miles or hop the light rail for one stop. Late evenings and very early mornings often mean no Route 5 coverage, so check the exact timetable for your flight time instead of guessing.
One practical tip: build at least a 60-minute buffer between scheduled bus arrival and boarding time at CLT, especially if you’re headed to Main terminal security during a 6–9 a.m. or 3–7 p.m. bank of departures.
