D/E connector beats the Admirals Club if you have Amex
The Centurion Lounge sits after security at the intersection of Concourses D and E in the Main terminal, and frequent AA flyers on FlyerTalk flat-out call it “way way better” than any Admirals Club in CLT. It opened in early 2020, so most of the growing pains and Covid-era cutbacks people complained about in the first reviews are now ancient history.
You’ll find the entrance in the D/E connector atrium, past security and above the concourse level, so it works for both domestic and international AA connections out of D, E and even C if you’re willing to walk 5–10 minutes. Access runs off eligible American Express cards (Centurion and Platinum lead the pack), and this is a true credit card lounge, not tied to a specific airline ticket.
Food is the main upgrade play over the Admirals Club: there’s a rotating hot buffet with proper mains rather than snack towers and hummus cups, and regulars report leaving here full instead of grabbing a $15 burger near Gate C15. Drinks are included too, with a staffed bar pouring cocktails and wine; tipping a couple of dollars in cash or via card keeps service snappy when the bar fills up around the 5–7 p.m. bank.
Space is the weak spot. CLT lounge gripe threads all mention crowding, and Centurion gets slammed during peak AA banks, especially mid-morning 9–11 a.m. and late afternoon 3–6 p.m. When that happens, expect waitlists at the door and every power outlet occupied, which is where some of the “too hard on the lounge” comments on FlyerTalk come from compared with bigger hub Centurions in places like DFW or MIA.
What regulars do: Amex Platinum and Centurion cardholders will walk over from B or C just to use this instead of the Admirals Club near their gate, building an extra 10–15 minutes into the connection. Some CLT veterans even time their visits outside the heaviest banks, ducking in just after the rush so they can actually find a seat and plug in for 30–45 minutes.
Tip: Landing on AA into CLT with at least a 70–90 minute layover? Route yourself via the D/E connector first, check the Centurion door for a waitlist, and only fall back to the Admirals Club if the line’s long enough to eat your whole connection.
