Landing at CJU with plans to self-drive the island
Gate 5 in Terminal 1 is your target if you’re renting a car at Jeju International Airport and need a shuttle to the off-site lots. There are no rental desks inside the main arrivals area, so don’t waste time wandering the baggage hall looking for Hertz or Lotte. Follow the signs to “Rent-a-car” near Gate 5 and you’ll hit the dedicated rental car building first.
The “rental car house” sits just outside Gate 5 and functions as a hub for all the company shuttles that run to their separate parking lots. A Jeju airport video guide spells it out: “exit through gate 5 and walk through the rental car house” before you can board a shuttle. Each desk in this building assigns you to a specific minibus, usually branded with the company name in big letters.
Every shuttle runs from this hub to an off-site lot in a loop, but the timings aren’t posted and can bunch badly during the late-morning domestic arrival bank. When three or four flights land around the same 20–30 minute window, you can see lines of 20–40 people per company waiting curbside. Build in extra time if you’re trying to reach Seogwipo, which is about 1 hour from the airport by car.
Costs and journey time on the shuttle are baked into your rental rate, so there’s no separate fare to pay and no ticket to buy at Gate 5. Most rides out to the lots sit in the 5–15 minute range depending on traffic around the airport rotary and how far your company’s yard is from CJU. You just show your voucher or reservation number at the desk, then staff direct you to the right queue.
Regular Jeju drivers swear by one move: pre-book online and walk straight from baggage claim to Gate 5 without stopping at the convenience stores or tourist counters. Hitting the rental car house within 5–10 minutes of landing often means boarding the first or second shuttle instead of standing in a long line with the rest of your flight. Late arrivals after 21:00 should double-check rental office closing times before they fly.
Watch out for the multi-step feel of the process: terminal to rental car house, paperwork at the counter, then shuttle, then final inspection at the lot. If you’re landing in that late-morning rush, figure on 30–60 minutes from baggage carousel to driving out of the lot. Practical tip: keep your license, International Driving Permit, and reservation QR code in hand before you walk out to Gate 5 so you don’t fumble for documents at the desk and miss a shuttle departure.
