CHS to Downtown Charleston by CARTA Bus (Route 11 & XP4)

Service Overview

CARTA is Charleston’s public bus system and the only true public transit option from Charleston International Airport (CHS). Buses board from a covered shelter just outside baggage claim and provide an affordable way to reach downtown without renting a car.

It’s best for solo travelers, budget-minded visitors, and anyone comfortable with fixed schedules. Families with lots of luggage and business travelers often prefer rideshare or taxis for door-to-door convenience. Reliability is generally solid, but as with most city buses, traffic and multiple stops can stretch trip times—especially on Route 11.

Route & Destinations

  • Route 11 (local): Runs into the city with multiple intermediate stops. Plan about ~1 hour to reach downtown depending on traffic and where you get off.
  • Express Route XP4: A faster airport-to-downtown option with limited stops, typically ~25–30 minutes to downtown.

Once downtown, CARTA routes connect with the free DASH trolleys, which are handy for moving around the historic district without paying another fare.

Coverage is best for downtown Charleston and areas along each route’s corridor. There is no train or metro service from CHS, so the bus is the main public option; for destinations outside the core area (beach communities, suburban office parks), consider a transfer, rideshare, or taxi.

Pricing & Tickets

Current fares can vary and weren’t listed in the airport’s published materials; the safest approach is to check the CARTA website/app for the latest fare and any day passes. If you’re planning multiple rides (airport trip plus downtown circulation), a pass can be better value than single rides.

  • Where to buy: Use CARTA’s app or follow posted instructions at/near the stop for the most up-to-date purchasing options.
  • Payment: Expect app-based/mobile payment options; if paying onboard, have backup payment ready in case exact-change rules apply (confirm in the app/site).

Schedule & Frequency

  • Route 11: Weekdays about 6:49 AM–8:10 PM (roughly every 45 minutes); weekends about hourly (Sat 7:39 AM–8:19 PM, Sun 10:08 AM–7:08 PM).
  • Express XP4: Generally 8:00 AM–7:40 PM on weekdays/Saturdays; Sundays about 12:00 PM–5:50 PM.

Peak road congestion can slow both routes, but the local Route 11 is more affected due to more stops. There are no late-night/very early bus options—if you arrive outside these windows, use rideshare, taxi, or a shuttle.

Practical Tips

  • Pickup point: Follow signs to Ground Transportation; CARTA boards at a covered shelter outside baggage claim.
  • Luggage: Space is limited compared with a car. Travel lighter if possible; keep bags close and avoid blocking aisles.
  • Accessibility: CARTA buses are typically accessible (ramps/priority areas); confirm specifics in the CARTA app/site if you need accommodations.
  • Real-time tracking: Use the CARTA app for the latest schedules, service alerts, and fare info.
  • Best alternatives: For fastest door-to-door, use Uber/Lyft from outside baggage claim. Taxis are also available (noted $17 minimum from CHS). Hotel shuttles can be free for guests.
