Metro Bus 3 runs between Christchurch Airport (stop at T outside Door 1) and the city in about 30 minutes, costing roughly NZ$4–5 with a Metrocard or a bit more paying cash. It’s the cheapest motorised way into town if your destination sits anywhere near routes 3 or the Orbiter.

The stop sits on the airport forecourt near Door 1 in front of T, so you’re outside the terminal in under 3 minutes from arrivals. Services typically run every 15–30 minutes in the daytime, stretching to longer gaps late evening; last buses toward town tend to be around 11 pm, so check the Metro timetable if you land late.

Pay on board with cash in NZD or tap a Metrocard; contactless bank cards are not universally working yet, and drivers don’t break large notes gladly. A standard adult fare citybound sits around NZ$4.20 with Metrocard, roughly NZ$8–9 return, which undercuts a NZ$50+ airport taxi by a mile.

Step-by-step from arrivals: (1) Exit T customs and follow “Buses” signs to Door 1, about a 200 m walk. (2) Find the Metro Bus 3 stop marked “City via Avonhead”. (3) Board at the front door and tell the driver your stop; pay cash or tag Metrocard. (4) Ride about 30 minutes to central stops like Bus Interchange on Lichfield Street. (5) From there, transfer to the Orbiter or other city routes if needed.

Seats fill a bit on weekday peaks around 8–9 am and 4–6 pm, and you’ll share space with local commuters and students rather than only airport traffic. Luggage goes in standard bus space; a 7 kg cabin bag is fine, but a pair of 23 kg checked bags will feel awkward in the aisle on a full run.
