Travelex sits in the public check-in area of Terminal T at Christchurch Airport, before security, so you can sort cash out even if someone is just dropping you off. It mainly handles major currencies like AUD, NZD, USD and EUR, and staff usually ask for a boarding pass if you’re buying less common notes.

Opening hours track peak flights: expect it open from early morning departures around 04:00 through to late-night international banks of flights, but it can shut between waves on quiet days. If you’re on a 02:00 or very late arrival, do not assume it’s staffed; have a card option as backup.

Rates are typical airport levels, meaning a noticeable spread versus mid-market (think several percent off what you see on XE or Wise). Commission fees vary by product, and buying cash on a Travelex prepaid card can be cheaper than straight counter currency if you’re moving a few hundred dollars or more.

Buy-back policies change, but staff currently quote separate rates for selling back AUD or USD when you return to CHC T, and they often need the original receipt for any promotional rate. Larger transactions over about NZD 2,000 can trigger ID checks under local regulations, so carry a passport or NZ driver licence.
