S13 S-Bahn: cheap straight shot from CGN to Köln Hbf

S13 runs from Cologne/Bonn Airport station under Terminal 1/2 straight to Köln Hauptbahnhof in about 15–20 minutes, so it’s the default choice if you just want a low-cost ride into central Cologne. Trains follow the same basic route as S19, and most visitors treat them as interchangeable for the airport–city run.

The S13 is part of the S-Bahn Rhein-Sieg network and usually runs every 20–30 minutes during the day, with the S13/S19 pattern together giving a higher effective frequency. A single VRS ticket from the airport to Köln Hbf normally costs just a few euros, much less than a taxi into the city center.

Airport access is simple: follow the DB/S-Bahn signs from Terminals 1 and 2 down to the station level, then look for trains marked “S13 Köln Hbf / Düren”. Platforms are numbered, and electronic boards list S13 and S19 departures with exact minutes, so you can see immediately which line comes first.

Transit nerds point out that S13 and S19 are often interwoven in the timetable, so you might see an S19 at :06 and an S13 at :21 past the hour. Together they usually beat waiting for a less frequent Regional-Express (RE), especially later in the evening after roughly 22:00 when RE services start thinning out.

On timing, S13 can be a few minutes slower than a Regional-Express into Köln Hbf, but it tends to feel more predictable after the evening peak. Reviews from Cologne forums mention that an S-Bahn at :xx often shows up even when the RE on the board gets delayed or quietly dropped.

Complaints: locals on r/cologne and TripAdvisor mention occasional cancellations or short-turning of S-Bahn services at intermediate stops before Düren, which is annoying if you insisted on S13 instead of taking the next S19. If the board flips from S13 to S19 to Köln Hbf, just board and treat them as the same thing for airport purposes.

Luggage is the other pain point. These are standard commuter EMUs with 2+2 seating and relatively tight door zones; when a plane has just dumped a full load, the door areas fill with suitcases between the airport station and Frankfurter Straße. If you carry a big checked bag, expect some squeezing and keep it sideways to avoid blocking the doors.

Regulars spread out along the platform and aim for carriages closer to the middle, which usually have a little more standing space and extra handrails near the doors. Some locals even walk one or two cars down from the main stairwell at the CGN station to dodge the densest crowd during the Airport–Köln Hbf stretch.

How to ride S13 from Cologne Bonn Airport

  • 1. From Terminals 1 or 2, follow the red DB/S-Bahn signs down to the airport rail station directly under the terminal complex.
  • 2. Buy a VRS ticket to “Köln Hbf” from the DB or VRS machines; the airport–city trip is one zone and costs just a few euros.
  • 3. Check the departure board for the next train to Köln Hbf; board whichever comes first, S13 or S19.
  • 4. Wait at least one carriage away from the main escalator on the platform for slightly more breathing room with luggage.
  • 5. Ride about 15–20 minutes to Köln Hauptbahnhof, then follow the signs up to the station concourse and connect to trams, buses, or taxis.

Tip: If an RE to Köln Hbf is leaving in under 5 minutes and you’re light on luggage, take it; otherwise just grab the first S13 or S19 and don’t overthink it.
