Five-minute walk from Terminals 1/2 gets you to Cologne Bonn Airport Station

The station sits directly under the terminal complex, linked to Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 by escalators and elevators, so you stay fully landside/indoors the whole way. From arrivals, follow the blue train icons; most people reach the platforms in about 5–7 minutes on foot if they’re not dragging huge bags.

S-Bahn lines S19 and often S13 run from the airport to Köln Hbf in roughly 15 minutes, with daytime frequencies around every 20 minutes. Regional Express trains like the RE6 and RE8 give you direct links to Bonn, Düsseldorf and other Rhine-Ruhr cities, so you can skip a taxi for most regional trips.

Ticket machines sit in the concourse just before the platforms and sell standard VRS tickets and DB fares, typically under €4 to Köln Hbf in 2024. Reviews flag the machines as slow, with English menus buried a couple of steps deep, so add 10 extra minutes if you plan to buy a paper ticket at peak times and you’re new to the system.

Regulars mostly skip the red DB machines and instead buy digital tickets through the DB Navigator app while still in the baggage hall at CGN. That way they walk straight from customs to the platform, just scanning the departure boards near arrivals to see which S-Bahn or RE is next and which track (usually Gleis 4 or 5 for city-bound services).

Platforms at Cologne Bonn Airport Station are partially exposed and can feel very windy in winter, especially in January and February when evening temperatures often drop close to 0°C. One TripAdvisor user mentioned waiting 20 minutes in a cold draft, so keep an extra layer handy in your carry-on if you’re landing late or have kids with you.

If you’re arriving into older gates in Terminal 1, expect one extra level change via stairs, escalator, or lift before you reach the main station corridor. Build a 10–15 minute buffer from gate to platform during busy morning waves and check the airport departure boards before heading down so you walk straight to the right track.
