Walk to Corfu Town

Pedestrian route

Pedestrian route Roughly 25–35 min walking between airport and central Corfu Town for an average walker Free, aside from your own effort

25–35 minutes on foot from CFU to central Corfu Town

The airport sits roughly 2 km south of Corfu Town, so walking works fine for backpackers and light-luggage travellers who don’t want to pay for a 10-minute taxi. Figure 25–35 minutes each way for an average walker between Terminal 1 and the Old Town or port area. Cost is zero apart from your energy.

This is a public streets route, not a marked airport path, and it’s available 24/7 as long as you’re happy walking alongside traffic. Most of the way runs on pavements, but several travellers mention narrow stretches near the airport junction where buses and scooters pass close. Expect some broken kerbs and uneven slabs along the 2 km.

Heat is the main issue: people who tried it around noon in July and August complain about full sun and almost no shade for long sections. A Reddit user said a 6:00 a.m. walk from town to the airport felt easy on cool pavements, but they wouldn’t repeat it at midday with a 28–32°C forecast. Treat early morning or late evening as your window.

Google Maps walking directions work in general but sometimes push you onto little cut-throughs that add stress without saving time. Regulars say to stick to the main road signed “Kerkyra”/Corfu centre, which stays lit better and avoids dodgy shortcuts. That main route also keeps you near bus stops if you change your mind.

Wheeled suitcases are the weak link here: multiple posters mention 25-minute walks turning into 40-minute slogs because wheels catch on broken pavement and high kerbs. A small backpack or soft duffel rides better over cracked concrete, especially near the airport junction and a couple of patched-up side streets.

How to walk between CFU and Corfu Town

  • 1. Exit Terminal 1 and walk out to the main airport access road, facing the direction of Corfu Town about 2 km away.
  • 2. Turn toward signs for “Corfu” or “Kerkyra centre” and follow the main road instead of cutting through backstreets that Google sometimes suggests.
  • 3. Stay on the pavement wherever possible; near the airport junction the sidewalk narrows, so walk single file and keep an eye on scooters and buses.
  • 4. Pass residential blocks and small shops over the next 15–20 minutes; use shop awnings for brief shade breaks if the sun is strong.
  • 5. Continue straight until you reach the denser streets of Corfu Town; from there it’s usually another 5–10 minutes to Old Town or the port, depending on your exact address.

Practical tip: if the forecast shows strong sun above 28°C and you have a heavy bag, walk one way in the cool (for example, 6–8 a.m.) and plan on the Line 15 bus or a taxi for the return.
