Air India’s CCU lounge feels more like a fenced-off gate area

Inside T2 at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International, the Air India Maharaja Lounge functions as a small, airline-only waiting room for business class passengers on AI flights rather than a full-service Star Alliance lounge. Reviews from FlyerTalk regulars repeatedly call it “a small room with basic snacks and tired chairs,” and even status holders say they remember it more for worn upholstery than any premium touches.

Access is restricted to Air India business class in T2, so Star Alliance Gold on other carriers typically use the generic TFS/Travel Club lounge instead with Priority Pass or credit card access. One FlyerTalk poster even said they would “rather take the generic TFS lounge with my card than the AI room unless flying them in J,” mainly because the AI space has limited food and almost no atmosphere.

Shower facilities are not available here at all; multiple travelers reported being told directly that there are no showers in the Maharaja Lounge at CCU and were pointed back toward landside facilities if they needed to freshen up. That makes this a poor choice if you have an overnight or sticky summer domestic connection and want a real clean-up before boarding an early morning Air India flight from T2.

Food runs on Air India’s schedule: regulars say hot dishes show up mostly around major AI departure banks, such as evening domestic waves, while mid-afternoon or late-night periods often shrink to cold snacks and biscuits only. When the buffet is stocked, expect a basic rotation of rice, dal and one curry, plus packaged namkeen or cookies, rather than a multi-station spread you might see in larger Star Alliance hubs.

Space is limited and the room reportedly feels crowded during peak AI banks, with elites from other Star Alliance carriers sometimes struggling to find a seat if they are granted access. Flyers mention dated furniture, sagging chairs and tired upholstery, which contrasts sharply with newer interiors at some third-party Indian lounges like the TFS/Travel Club rooms elsewhere at CCU.

There is no quiet room or nap zone here, and several posts note that staff politely stop passengers from lying across multiple seats or trying to turn a row of chairs into a makeshift bed. Regulars handle this by timing their visit to arrive roughly 30–40 minutes before boarding, grabbing a quick plate of rice and dal plus a soft drink, then heading back to the T2 gate once their Air India flight shows “boarding” on the screens.

Practical tip: If you hold a lounge card like Priority Pass, check the TFS/Travel Club option in T2 first; treat the Air India Maharaja Lounge as a backup when that room is full or when you specifically want to stay closest to an Air India departure gate.
