S-Bahn S3 from Belp to Bern
The S-Bahn S3 is the rail spine between Belp and Bern main station, and it’s the piece that makes BRN work well if you’re staying in Belp or continuing by long‑distance train from Bern. You take the short airport bus from Terminal T1 to Belp station, then switch to the S3 for the rail leg into the city instead of paying Swiss taxi rates.
From Belp, the S3 runs straight to Bern Hauptbahnhof, giving you a predictable fixed-track option once you’re off the airport bus from T1. Journey time, frequency, and exact fares on this Belp–Bern S-Bahn line change occasionally (your ticket machine or SBB app shows the current numbers), but it’s consistently cheaper than a door-to-door taxi and usually quicker than fighting traffic at busy times around Bern city.
Tickets for the Belp–Bern S3 segment are sold on standard Libero/SBB machines at Belp station and in the SBB Mobile app, and you can combine them with the airport bus section on one ticket instead of buying separate legs. If you already hold a Swiss Travel Pass, Half Fare Card, or a Libero zone pass that covers Belp and Bern, the S3 rail part is either fully included or discounted, so check which zones (for example 100/101 for Bern) are printed on your existing pass before you pay again.
The S3 is a regular S-Bahn train with 2nd class as the default, and in typical Swiss fashion there’s decent punctuality and clear platform displays at Belp and Bern. Trains stop at several intermediate stations between Belp and Bern, but you stay on the same S3 unit the whole way and don’t need to change again once you’ve left the airport bus at Belp.
For late arrivals into BRN T1, the key detail is the timing between your airport bus and the last S3 run back towards Bern, which you’ll see as “S3 Belp–Bern” on the SBB app or station board. Build the buffer: aim for one earlier bus from the airport than you strictly need so a small delay at baggage claim doesn’t strand you in Belp with only taxis left.
