Light rail

Ten minutes gets you from BRE to Domsheide on Tram 6

Tram 6 stops directly in front of Bremen Airport’s terminal, at ground level, with platforms just a 2–3 minute flat walk from arrivals in Terminal 1. This is a normal city line, not a special airport service, so you follow signs for Linie 6 rather than anything marked “airport express.” Trams run straight into the city centre and on to Bremen Hauptbahnhof without a transfer.

A single AB ticket for Tram 6 currently runs around €3, valid from the airport to both Domsheide and the main station within zone 100. Ticket machines stand by the stop and accept coins, notes, and most contactless bank cards, and you buy before boarding. The same ticket also works on other BSAG trams and buses in the city during its validity period, so you don’t pay a separate “airport premium.”

Typical daytime headways sit at about 7–10 minutes, with the ride from the airport to Domsheide taking roughly 10 minutes and to Bremen Hauptbahnhof about 15. In the early morning and late evening, expect slightly longer gaps, closer to 15 minutes. Service runs every day, including Sundays and holidays, though the late‑night timetable after roughly 23:00 is thinner, so check the BSAG or VBN app if you land late.

Regulars point out two things: you can use the same “StadtTicket” or standard Kurzstrecke/Einzelticket on Tram 6, and there is no dedicated airport fare class. Locals often stand near the doors for the short hop to Domsheide or the station rather than hunting for seats, which matters in the peaks around 07:30–09:00 and 16:30–18:00 when the tram fills with commuters and students.

Watch out for the ticket machines if you don’t read German well: reviewers flag that finding the correct “EinzelTicket” or day ticket for zone 100 can take an extra minute, even with the English language option. Another complaint: line 6 can be tight with luggage in the rush hours, especially between Terminal 1 and the stops at Neuenlander Straße and Domsheide, so avoid the busiest windows if you can.

Step-by-step from arrivals at Bremen Airport

  • 1. Exit Terminal 1 arrivals and walk straight ahead 100–150 metres to the surface tram platforms marked “Linie 6.”
  • 2. At the platform machines, pick zone 100 (EinzelTicket or Tagesticket) and pay about €3 for a single adult ride into town.
  • 3. Check the electronic sign for “6 Universität” or “6 Hauptbahnhof / Universität” and stand near the middle of the platform doors.
  • 4. Board promptly when the tram arrives; keep luggage near the multi‑purpose spaces by the doors instead of blocking the aisle.
  • 5. For the city centre, get off at Domsheide after around 10 minutes; for trains, stay on to Bremen Hauptbahnhof, roughly 15 minutes from the airport.

One tip: download the BSAG or VBN app on airport Wi‑Fi before you walk out; in practice, buying a mobile ticket there is quicker than fighting with the platform machine while Tram 6 rolls in.
