Five minutes from curb to gate is normal at BIL’s Main

The Main Terminal at Billings Logan International Airport handles every airline here, including Alaska, Allegiant, American, Cape Air, Delta, and United, all under one compact roof. Check-in counters sit in a single ground-level hall, so you can walk from Alaska at one end to United at the other in under two minutes. Locals on FlyerTalk lump BIL in with “nice, new, and rarely crowded” western airports, and that tracks: lines at the counters usually move fast except at the first Delta and United banks around 5:00–7:00 a.m.

TSA security sits roughly in the center of the Main Terminal, opposite the ticket counters, and there’s only one checkpoint for all flights. With no PreCheck-only lane advertised, expect a single queue that feeds two or three screening lines during morning and afternoon peaks. Regulars report clearing security in 10–15 minutes most of the day, though the 5:30–7:00 a.m. rush can stretch that closer to 25. Build the buffer; treat 45 minutes from curb to gate as a safe standard if you’re checking bags.

After security, the expanded concourse runs in a straight line with gates grouped fairly close together, so you can walk from the first to the last gate in under five minutes at an easy pace. Local coverage of the expansion says the new concourse finally “feels like a real modern airport,” with higher ceilings and more glass than the older layout. Seating around the gates has improved as part of that project, and travelers who are used to big hubs mention it’s rare to have to hunt hard for a seat or an outlet at BIL.

Food and shopping inside the Main Terminal are limited, and the airport’s own site doesn’t list brand-name chains by gate, so plan around that. Expect basic café or snack-bar setups for coffee, sandwiches, and grab-and-go options, with higher prices than in town and early closing times that can match the last flights, often before 10:00 p.m. If you land late on an Allegiant evening arrival or catch an early morning Alaska or Cape Air departure, assume you might only find vending machines operating near the gate areas.

There are no airline or independent lounges in the Main Terminal, so Delta Sky Club, United Club, and American Admirals Club members don’t get anything extra here. Seating in the expanded concourse tries to make up for that with more power outlets than the old building, and flyers on forum threads point out that it’s still easy to find a plug near most gates. With no lounge to retreat to, gate areas double as your office; bring your own food and aim for a seat along the windows, where you can usually snag power and watch traffic on Runway 10R/28L.

Ground transport ties directly into the Main Terminal’s front curb on Airport Road, about 3 miles from downtown Billings, with taxis and rideshares typically taking 10–15 minutes into the city. Rental car counters sit just inside the terminal near baggage claim, so you can walk from belt to desk in under two minutes, and the walk out to the rental lot adds another three. If you’re on a tight schedule, sit toward the front of the aircraft on arrival; at a small field like BIL, beating a single full United or Delta 737 to the rental counter can save you 15 minutes at peak times.
