Gate-side SPAR in Terminal 1 keeps early flights alive

By the main departures hall in Terminal 1, SPAR is your basic grab-and-go option once you’re through security at Birmingham Airport. It runs long hours to catch early-morning and late-evening flights, so you can grab a meal deal instead of gambling on plane food. Expect standard UK high-street pricing rather than airport-gouge levels, with sandwiches and snacks generally under £6.

This SPAR leans heavily on takeaway: pre-packed sandwiches, salads, crisps, chocolate bars, and bottled drinks in full-size fridges near the entrance. Coffee from the self-serve machines usually comes in under £4, cheaper than most sit-down places in Terminal 1. You’ll also find basics like chewing gum, tissues, phone cables, and small toiletries, useful if your flight from BHX runs over two hours and you forgot something at home.

Hot food is limited compared with the larger cafés in Terminal 1, so treat this more as a supply stop than a proper meal. Alcohol is sold within the normal airport restrictions, with small cans and miniatures for people connecting onward from Birmingham. Expect queues to spike around the 06:00–08:00 and 17:00–19:00 banks of departures when budget carriers push out multiple flights in short windows.

Tip: if your gate is in the low 10s, stop at SPAR right after security rather than waiting for something nearer the gate, as options thin out quickly the further you walk down Terminal 1.
