Train

€3.50 AB ticket gets you from BER to downtown on S9

The S9 S-Bahn runs from both Terminal 1-2 station at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) into the city on the Ringbahn, hitting Ostkreuz, Treptower Park, Warschauer Straße, Ostbahnhof and beyond. It’s run by Deutsche Bahn, uses standard BVG/DB Berlin ABC tickets, and is the budget rail option if you don’t care about a few extra stops.

The line usually runs every 20 minutes during the day, with first trains around 4:30–5:00 and last ones close to midnight; always check the exact times for your date. From BER to Ostkreuz on S9 you’re looking at roughly 25–30 minutes, and about 35–40 minutes to stations like Pankow or Spandau when the full route is active. Trains are all-stop commuter style, so expect lots of intermediate stations.

You board the S9 at the underground “Flughafen BER – Terminal 1-2” station, directly below Terminal 1 and signposted from Terminal 2 with a short 5–10 minute walk. Tickets come from the red DB or yellow BVG machines on the station concourse; choose Berlin ABC for €3.80 single (as of 2024) to cover the airport zone C. Validate in the yellow or red stamp machines on the platform before you step on the train.

Compared with the FEX airport express, S9 is slower but goes straight to city S-Bahn hubs like Ostkreuz and Warschauer Straße without a change. This helps if you’re staying near the Ring or in areas covered by the S41/S42 loop. The same ABC ticket also covers transfers onto U-Bahn, trams, and buses for 120 minutes from validation, so one ticket can get you from BER all the way to your final neighborhood address.

Watch out for: reviews hammer BER for weak city access, and that sentiment hits S9 hardest because of the stop pattern. Trains can be crowded at peak times, and there’s no luggage racks beyond a few open spaces near the doors. If you land late, frequencies drop and track works around Ostkreuz or the Ring can push you onto rail replacement buses, so build a 15–20 minute buffer into your schedule.

How to ride S9 step by step:

  • 1. From arrivals at Terminal 1, follow “Airport Express/S-Bahn” signs down to “Flughafen BER – Terminal 1-2” station; from Terminal 2, walk 5–10 minutes following the same signs.
  • 2. At the concourse, buy a Berlin ABC single ticket (about €3.80 in 2024) from a DB or BVG machine; cards and coins usually work.
  • 3. Validate the ticket in a small yellow or red validator on the platform; you risk a €60 fine if you skip this.
  • 4. Check the overhead board for “S9 Pankow / Spandau” (exact terminus can change) and wait on the indicated platform, usually Gleis 1 or 2.
  • 5. Board any carriage, park luggage by the doors or fold-up seats, and stay aware of your stop; BER to Ostkreuz is roughly 25–30 minutes.
  • 6. At your S-Bahn stop, you can transfer within the 120-minute ticket window to U-Bahn, tram, or bus without buying another ticket.

One last tip: if your hotel is near Ostkreuz, Warschauer Straße, or along the Ring, S9 usually beats FEX plus a transfer, both in hassle and total walking with luggage.
