Old-school Austin sub shop flavor before your Barbara Jordan flight

ThunderCloud Subs sits past security in the Barbara Jordan terminal, so this is a last local stop before you board. It’s the same Austin chain you see around town, just in airport form, with the familiar yellow-and-blue branding and the classic cold and hot subs line. Figure roughly $10–$13 for a regular sandwich, more if you add chips and a drink.

Menu is straightforward: turkey, ham, roast beef, tuna, veggie, plus hot options like meatball and chicken salad melts. They build everything to order on the line, and you can still get the standard ThunderCloud setup with lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, mayo, and peppers. Expect airport pricing that runs a couple dollars higher than the city locations, but it still undercuts many sit-down spots in Barbara Jordan.

ThunderCloud usually opens early morning to catch the first AUS departures, then runs into the evening bank; think roughly 6 a.m. until around the last mainline flights. That makes it workable for both breakfast and dinner grabs. Breakfast sandwiches come on the same sub rolls, with eggs, cheese, and your choice of bacon or sausage, which travel better than a messy taco if you’re heading to a tight gate area.

Service is counter-order, pay, then wait at the pick-up end; for a standard cold sub, you’re often out in under 10 minutes, though peak mid-morning and late-afternoon banks can push that. Seating is shared with the nearby food court pods, so you’re fine bringing a sub back toward gates 12–25 if those are closer to your departure.

Tip: ask them to cut the sub into thirds and wrap it tight; it’s easier to eat in the boarding area or on a 2–3 hour leg without turning your seat pocket into a crumb trap.
