Bus

Bus About 45–60 min airport–Syntagma on X95 off‑peak; 80–100 min airport–Piraeus on X96 depending on traffic. €5.50 flat fare for airport express buses (e.g., X95, X96).

€5.50 gets you from ATH to Syntagma or Piraeus all night

Public Bus Lines at Athens International Airport run 24/7 and cover the gaps when the metro shuts down, which hits late at night and early morning. The key airport express routes are X95 to Syntagma, X96 to Piraeus, X93 to Kifisos intercity terminal, and X97 to Elliniko metro. Every one of these uses a special airport ticket, different from the standard 90‑minute city bus fare.

The flat fare is €5.50 for all airport express buses, paid once for the whole ride. Tickets are sold at the blue kiosks just outside Arrivals at the Main terminal, right by the signed bus stands. Drivers sometimes sell tickets onboard, but regulars say not to count on that after midnight. Using a normal €1.20 urban ticket on these lines can lead to fines during inspections.

Off‑peak, X95 runs the airport–Syntagma route in about 45–60 minutes, but locals report that can stretch to 75–90 minutes in rush hour or during demonstrations around the square. X96 to Piraeus usually needs 80–100 minutes, especially when a ferry bank is arriving or leaving. Schedules say one thing; traffic easily doubles it, so build buffer time if you have a port connection.

Frequency is roughly every 15–20 minutes during the day, then drops to about every 30–40 minutes deep at night. X95 is the default night ride into town and often fills with students and backpackers after midnight in summer. X96 after 02:00 can be full of half‑asleep ferry passengers and backpacks wedged into the aisles.

How to use the airport buses step by step

  • 1. Walk to the bus stands outside Arrivals at the Main terminal. Follow the “Buses” signs; the stops for X95, X96, X93, and X97 sit in a row about 50–100 meters from the doors.
  • 2. Buy a €5.50 airport bus ticket at the kiosk. Ask for the exact route (for example, “X95 Syntagma” or “X96 Piraeus”); the ticket is specific to airport service, not regular city buses.
  • 3. Find the right bus number on the stop signs. X95 lists “Airport–Syntagma,” X96 shows “Airport–Piraeus,” and each has its own pole and timetable posted.
  • 4. Board through the front door with luggage ready. Regulars grab the luggage racks near the entrance immediately, since space runs out fast on crowded night runs.
  • 5. Validate your ticket in the orange/blue machine right after boarding. Insert or tap until it beeps and prints the time; drivers frequently shout “validate ticket!” when tourists forget.
  • 6. Ride to your stop and keep an eye on the screens. X95 ends at Syntagma Square, while X96 terminates at Piraeus; locals sometimes hop off X95 one or two stops before Syntagma to dodge square traffic and walk 5–10 minutes.
  • 7. Keep the ticket until you exit the bus. Inspectors occasionally board mid‑route, and fines for invalid or wrong tickets are far higher than the €5.50 fare.

Watch out for older buses on some runs, patchy air‑conditioning in August, and heavy crowding around midnight in peak season. If you have a morning ferry from Piraeus, regulars aim for one X96 earlier than the last “safe” option, in case traffic turns that 80‑minute ride into a 100‑minute slog. One extra bus can save a missed ferry and a lot more than €5.50.
