Local Minibus Route to St. John's

Bus

Bus

US$1.50–$3 gets you from ANU to downtown St. John’s

The Local Minibus Route to St. John’s runs from just outside Terminal 1 at V. C. Bird International Airport and heads into the capital in about 15–25 minutes, traffic and stops depending. You’re looking at a big price gap versus taxis, which often sit around US$15–25 for the same ride. Buses don’t run 24/7; service generally starts around 6:00 and winds down by early evening, so late-night arrivals are out.

This is a regular public minibus, not an airport-branded shuttle, and it typically shows a “St. John’s” sign in the front window. Most drivers accept both Eastern Caribbean dollars and US dollars, with EC$4–8 or about US$1.50–$3 covering a one-way ride. You pay the driver directly when you board or just before getting off; there’s no card payment and no advance tickets.

To catch it from Terminal 1, walk out of arrivals, pass the taxi queue, and look for minibuses stopping along the main airport road within 200–300 meters of the terminal exit. There’s no big timetable board or electronic display. Locals usually just wait by the roadside; aim for the same spot and confirm “St. John’s?” with the driver before climbing in. Expect basic bench seating and minimal space for large checked bags.

Most routes end near the main bus station and market area in central St. John’s, roughly 7–8 km from the airport. From there, you can walk 5–15 minutes to many guesthouses and the cruise pier or grab another short bus or taxi. Figure on at least 45–60 minutes total from walking out of arrivals to standing in downtown, including waiting time for the next minibus to fill and depart.

Big thing to remember: the minibus is best for hand luggage and a backpack, not two 23 kg suitcases. If you’re landing after 18:00–19:00 or with a red-eye, skip this and budget for a taxi. One practical move: keep small bills (US$1s or EC$5s and EC$10s) in a pocket so you’re not trying to break a US$50 in a crowded bus.
