Free waiting beats circling the terminals
The Cell Phone Lot at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport is a free waiting area for drivers picking up passengers from the South and North terminals. You park here, keep your engine off, and wait for the “I’m at baggage claim” text instead of doing loops past arrivals. It’s meant strictly for active pick-ups, not long-term parking or sleeping in your car overnight.
This lot sits a short drive from the main airport access road, a few minutes from both the South and North terminal arrival curbs. There’s no ticket machine, no gate, and no fee; you just pull in, choose a marked space, and stay with your vehicle. Because it’s outside the paid garage and surface lots, you skip short-term parking rates that at ANC start charging from the first hour.
The Cell Phone Lot is basic: standard asphalt, painted stalls, and enough room for multiple cars waiting on a single flight arrival. There are no restrooms, food outlets, or terminal-style seating here, unlike inside the paid parking area next to the South Terminal. Plan to arrive with a full tank from nearby gas stations on International Airport Road, since you can’t refuel or grab a coffee without leaving the lot.
Airport rules require you to stay with your car and roll to the terminal curb as soon as your passenger reaches the arrivals level at either the South or North terminal. No idling at the curb is allowed, so time your move: it’s usually just a few minutes’ drive from the Cell Phone Lot to the pickup lanes. One simple tip: have your arriving passenger text the specific airline and door number (for example, “Alaska Airlines, South Terminal Door 2”) so you can pull in, load up, and head back toward International Airport Road quickly.
