John Bell Terminal

John Bell Terminal hosts Rex Airlines.

Three Rex flights a day run through Albany’s John Bell Terminal.

This is a single-building setup at Albany Regional Airport (ALH) in Western Australia, handling only Rex Airlines domestic services. No jet bridges, no long walks, no confusion over terminal numbers. You enter through one main front door, check in with Rex, pass through a single security point, and you’re basically at the gates in under 5–10 minutes once it’s busy.

Check-in desks sit just inside the main hall, with Rex counters handling all baggage drop and boarding passes. With only a handful of RPT flights on the schedule, counters usually open around 90 minutes before departures and close about 30 minutes out. There are no automated bag drops or rival airline queues, so lines form in just one place and move at the pace of each individual check-in.

Security is one screening lane in the middle of the building, directly ahead of check-in. When a Dash 8 or Saab load arrives at once, the line can briefly stretch back toward the entrance, but it clears as soon as the one flight processes. Allow 20–30 minutes if a morning or late-afternoon Rex service is due; at other times you might walk straight through in under 5 minutes.

Inside the terminal, all departure and arrival activity shares the same compact floorplate, with seating areas grouped near a small number of gate doors leading to the aircraft stands. Planes park on the apron right outside, usually within a 1–2 minute walk from the terminal door to the air stairs. Boarding calls are made over a simple PA and often directly by Rex staff at the single departure gate area.

Food options are minimal: current listings show no catalogued restaurants or branded chains at John Bell Terminal. At best, expect a basic kiosk or vending machines for snacks and drinks, not a full café menu. If you need a proper meal, eat in Albany town before heading the 11–12 km out to the airport along Albany Highway and Albany Highway South Coast Highway junction.

There are no lounges here: no Rex regional lounge, no third-party club, and no pay-per-use facility. Every passenger, including Rex frequent flyers, waits in the same general seating zones near the gate doors. Power outlets can be limited, so charge devices in town or bring a small power bank if you’re planning to work before a Perth connection.

Shopping is equally sparse, with no catalogued duty-free, bookshop, or fashion outlets listed for ALH. You might find a small stand with local brochures or minimal travel items, but don’t count on dedicated stores for chargers, toiletries, or last-minute gifts. Pick up any essentials in Albany’s supermarkets or petrol stations before the roughly 10–15 minute drive to the airport.

Arrivals are straightforward: aircraft park on the apron, passengers walk a short distance to the terminal, and baggage comes out on a simple belt or collection point inside the same building. With only one airline in play, bags often appear within 10–15 minutes of arrival. Outside, the car park sits directly in front of the terminal, with short-term and long-term spaces sharing the same general area only a few dozen metres from the door.

Ground transport is basic, with local taxis and pre-arranged shuttles picking up in front of the building, and car hire desks (when staffed) located just inside the terminal. The drive into Albany CBD usually takes around 10–15 minutes, depending on traffic along Albany Highway. If you’re landing on a late Rex evening service, book a taxi or car in advance, because on-demand options can thin out after the last flight.

Tip: arrive about 60 minutes before a Rex departure at ALH, eat in town first, and bring any work, snacks, or chargers you need, because John Bell Terminal runs on simplicity, not services.
