Five minutes from T1 security, Local Crafts Boutique is the quick detour if you want something actually made in Kazakhstan.
This shop sits airside in Terminal T1, on the main departures level, and focuses on Kazakh-made souvenirs rather than generic duty-free brands. Shelves carry felt yurts, hand-embroidered textiles, small dombra miniatures, and fridge magnets with “Almaty” or “Kazakhstan” printed on them. Most small items run in the 2,000–5,000 KZT range, with larger pieces like wool throws and pottery climbing toward 20,000 KZT.
Opening hours generally track T1’s outbound bank, roughly 24 hours, but the best-stocked time seems to be daytime departures between 09:00 and 20:00. If you’re flying from T2 on a regional or low-cost carrier, note that this shop is in T1, which usually means a landside walk and a second security check. Prices are fixed and clearly tagged in KZT, and staff usually speak at least basic English and Russian.
Gift-wise, look at the smaller felt items, traditional patterned scarves, and boxed confectionery with Kazakh branding; they pack flat and survive a long-haul in the overhead bin. Bigger ceramics and glass pieces look nice but risk breakage on a tight connection through hubs like IST or DXB. There’s no custom packaging beyond simple paper bags, so bring a spare packing cube if you plan to buy anything fragile.
Plan 10–15 minutes here before boarding starts; it’s enough time to scan the shelves and still reach most T1 gates without rushing.
