Terminal 1

1 airline

Terminal T1 hosts MAI.

Single-terminal Sittwe setup: T1 handles all MAI flights

Every commercial departure at Sittwe Airport runs out of Terminal 1, with Myanmar Airways International (MAI) as the headline carrier. There’s no Terminal 2, no domestic vs international split, and no separate concourses to think about. If you have a boarding pass for AKY, you’re going through T1, full stop.

Terminal 1 sits on a compact footprint, more in line with a regional airfield than a capital-city hub. Check-in desks sit just inside the entrance, with only a few counters active at a time, typically all serving MAI flights. Lines move based on flight time, not elite status or priority lanes, so arrive at least 60–90 minutes before departure if you’re on a morning bank.

Security sits immediately beyond the small check-in zone, only a short walk from the front door of T1. Screening is basic and handled at a limited number of lanes, so a single full MAI departure can back things up for 10–15 minutes. Liquids rules may be enforced inconsistently, but you should still pack as if standard airport security applies.

Past security, Terminal 1 offers a single waiting area with seats grouped near just a few gates, as the airport handles a very short list of daily departures. There are no jet bridges here; you usually board MAI aircraft via stairs from the apron after a short walk or shuttle ride. Ground staff call flights by route and flight number, so keep an ear on announcements rather than relying on screens.

Dining options inside T1 are extremely limited, with no catalogued restaurants or branded chains on record. At times, a small kiosk or counter may sell bottled water and basic snacks, but this is not guaranteed on every operating day. If you need a proper meal, eat in town before heading to the airport or bring something with you to the terminal.

There are no known lounges in Sittwe’s Terminal 1, and MAI does not appear to offer a dedicated premium space at AKY. Business-class passengers and frequent flyers use the same seating area as everyone else, and boarding is called from the general gate area. Power outlets can be scarce near the seats, so charge your phone fully before leaving your hotel.

Retail is almost non-existent in T1, with no catalogued shops or duty-free outlets at Sittwe Airport. You won’t find branded travel stores, last-minute electronics, or large souvenir stands in the terminal. If you need items like chargers, SIM cards, or over-the-counter medication, buy them in Sittwe city before your ride to AKY.

Facilities at Terminal 1 stay basic: standard restrooms, simple seating, and some overhead fans or basic cooling, depending on current maintenance and power. Don’t count on strong Wi‑Fi; mobile data from local carriers usually works better in and around the building. Keep some cash in Myanmar kyat handy in case a small kiosk is open and only accepts notes.

One practical tip for AKY T1: sort out food, cash, and phone charging in town, then treat the terminal as a straightforward check-in and wait point for your MAI flight.
