Main Terminal hosts Solomon Airlines.

Main Terminal overview

Dash 8s and Twin Otters from Solomon Airlines are basically the only thing using the Main Terminal at Gwaunaru'u Airport (AKS). This is a single low-key building next to the short airstrip, with one small landside area and a simple holding room for departures. There’s no concept of multiple concourses or gates here; staff just call your flight and walk you out to the aircraft on foot.

Check-in runs old-school: Solomon Airlines agents set up for specific flights, usually just for the Auki–Honiara runs. There are no self-service kiosks, no bag drops, and no electronic departure boards. You check in at a basic counter, hand over your ID, get a paper boarding pass, then wait nearby until boarding is called by flight number and destination.

Security is minimal and local-style. Expect a basic screening right before you enter the tiny departures area rather than a big centralized checkpoint. There are no separate lanes, no PreCheck-style programs, and no secondary doors; one simple path takes everyone from check-in to the airside holding room and then out to the runway when boarding starts.

Food options inside the Main Terminal are effectively zero: no listed restaurants, no coffee chains, no bar. Depending on the day, you might find a small kiosk or local vendor selling water or soft drinks, but nothing is guaranteed and nothing runs to fixed hours. Bring your own snacks and a full water bottle (filled before security) if you’re connecting from town.

Shopping is the same story: no catalogued shops, duty free, or branded newsstands in the Main Terminal. You will not find SIM cards, chargers, or souvenirs with set prices. If you need cash, mobile data, or a power bank, sort it out in Auki town or in Honiara before coming to AKS. Treat the terminal as a waiting shed next to the runway, not as a place to gear up.

There are no lounges at Gwaunaru'u and no paid waiting rooms. Seating in the Main Terminal is limited to a handful of basic chairs or benches in the departures area, and they fill quickly when a Dash 8 departure lines up. Power outlets are scarce, and there are no dedicated charging stations, so arrive with your phone already charged to 100%.

Facilities stay basic across the board: expect simple toilets, usually without air conditioning, and no separate parenting rooms or business corners. Signage is minimal but the building is small enough that you can see every functional area in a few steps. Lighting and airflow depend heavily on the time of day and weather, so it can feel hot and humid in the middle of the afternoon.

Ground access links the Main Terminal to Auki town by local road; the distance is roughly 13 km, and the drive tends to take 20–30 minutes depending on conditions. There is no organized airport bus, no app-based ride share, and no big taxi rank. Most visitors arrange a hotel pickup or a local driver ahead of time and agree on a cash fare before leaving town.

Plan your timing around the aircraft movement: AKS typically sees just a few Solomon Airlines flights a day, so staff open and close the Main Terminal around those operations. Arriving 45–60 minutes before your scheduled departure usually works; turning up three hours early just means sitting in the heat. One simple tip: buy water and food in Auki, charge your devices there, and treat the Main Terminal as a short stop between the road and the Dash 8.
