20–30 minutes from King Salmon pier to Katmai

Katmai Water Taxi runs seasonal boat transfers between King Salmon and the Brooks Camp area of Katmai National Park, usually operating from late May through September. Boats depart from the King Salmon dock, a short drive from King Salmon Airport (AKN) Terminal 1, and cross the Naknek River and surrounding waters in roughly 20–30 minutes depending on conditions.

You book Katmai Water Taxi directly in advance, and spots often fill on peak July sockeye days when river use is heavy. Fares are typically quoted per person for a one-way or same-day round trip, and you’ll get a specific pickup time window, often within a 30–60 minute range around your requested slot. Build at least a 2-hour buffer between your Ravn Alaska or other regional flight arrival at AKN and your scheduled boat departure to account for bags and the short transfer to the dock.

The water taxi operates on small enclosed boats with limited seating, usually under a dozen passengers per run, and luggage space is tight. Most operators cap personal gear at one larger pack plus one smaller day bag per person, and they may set a soft weight limit like 50–60 lb total per passenger, so confirm limits when you reserve. If you’re hauling camera gear for bears at Brooks Falls, pack it in one carry-style backpack to keep loading simple.

Weather in King Salmon can shift fast, with winds off the Naknek River and Bristol Bay often picking up in the afternoon, so departures may slide by 15–30 minutes or more. On rough days, operators sometimes bunch runs to minimize time spent crossing in chop. If you have an evening departure from AKN, avoid booking the last water taxi of the day; aim to be back at the dock at least 3 hours before your scheduled flight.

Transfers from AKN Terminal 1 to the King Salmon dock generally take 10–15 minutes by local taxi or lodge shuttle. Some lodges in King Salmon bundle Katmai Water Taxi seats with their own packages and will time your airport pickup about 30 minutes after your posted arrival time. Ask your lodge or the water taxi operator in advance which vehicle to look for at the terminal curb so you’re not guessing between the handful of vans that show up when a Dash 8 lands.

Practical tip: Pack a dry bag large enough for your main pack and wear rubber boots or waterproof shoes; loading at the King Salmon dock and at Katmai can involve stepping in 1–4 inches of water, and cold, wet feet make a long day at Brooks Falls feel twice as long.
