R$5 city bus link between AJU and Atalaia/downtown
The Ônibus Municipal Atalaia–Centro is the rock-bottom cost option from Aracaju – Santa Maria Airport (AJU) T1 to both Atalaia beach and the Centro area, running on the normal city bus network for roughly the same fare as any local ride in Aracaju (around a few reais, usually under R$6). It suits solo travelers or backpackers landing in daytime who already feel comfortable using Brazilian urban buses and speaking at least basic Portuguese with the driver or cobrador.
This is a standard city line, not an airport coach, so you board at the public bus stop just outside T1 rather than a dedicated transfer counter, and you pay the regular on-board city fare in cash (small bills and coins in reais only, no cards). The bus usually carries locals heading between the Atalaia beachfront hotels, residential neighborhoods, and the commercial streets downtown near Centro, so signs show the termini “Atalaia” and “Centro” instead of any airport branding.
Because it’s a municipal route with normal daytime hours, plan to use it only when landing or departing during daylight or early evening, and switch to a táxi or app car for late-night flights that arrive after typical city service winds down around 22:00–23:00. The ride can stretch if Avenida Beira Mar or the corridor toward Centro clogs up in rush hour, so don’t cut it close for departures, and build at least a 1‑hour buffer from hotel door in Atalaia to AJU check‑in in T1.
The main win here is price: compared with a R$30–R$60 app car from Atalaia to AJU, the city bus keeps the airport transfer to pocket change, which adds up over a week of hostel nights near Praia de Atalaia or a budget stay downtown near the Mercado Municipal. The trade‑off is comfort and speed, with no luggage racks, more stops, and standing room only at peak commuter times around 07:00–09:00 and 17:00–19:00.
Final tip: before you exit the terminal, use the airport Wi‑Fi in T1 to check the latest bus stop location on Google Maps, memorise “Atalaia–Centro” on the front placard, and have the address of your pousada written in Portuguese to show the driver when you board.
