Duty Free

T1

Gate area at tiny T1, Island Craft is your only duty free

Aitutaki Airport’s T1 is one small terminal, and Island Craft is the single duty free option before you board your domestic Air Rarotonga flights to Rarotonga. Stock is basic compared with RAR: think spirits, some local souvenirs, and last‑minute gifts rather than full-size airport retail. You’re airside as soon as you check in, so you’ll see the shop right by the waiting area and runway view.

Cook Islands duty free rules still apply on domestic sectors connecting onward, so Island Craft mainly targets people heading home via Rarotonga with an international leg the same day. Expect standard regional liquor brands and a few Cook Islands labels instead of big-city mega ranges. Prices track Cook Islands government duty free guidance more than big-airport discount campaigns, so don’t expect deep sales, just tax-free compared with local shops in Aitutaki village.

Opening hours follow the day’s Air Rarotonga schedule, so on light-traffic days with only one or two departures, Island Craft may only open around check‑in and boarding windows. There’s no guarantee it will be open if you just drop by the airport in the middle of the day. Stock can run low at peak holiday periods when RAR–AIT flights are full, and restocks usually line up with arriving services rather than fixed times.

There are no published speciality “must-buy” items, but this is a straightforward spot for grabbing a bottle or a small Cook Islands gift instead of hunting in town before your flight from T1. Payment is usually in New Zealand dollars, with cash often faster than cards when the terminal is busy around a single banked departure. Practical tip: check your international allowance from Rarotonga first so you don’t overbuy here and face repacking later at RAR.
