Direct boarding from the lounge to your Air New Zealand flight

This Air New Zealand Koru Lounge in T1 at Aitutaki links straight to the aircraft door, so Premium passengers and Koru Club members skip the public boarding queue at Gate 4-level stands and walk out from the lounge when called.

The space runs as two small rooms that locals call “Lounge 1” and “Lounge 2,” with the main room seating around 45 people and the overflow section only opened when loads on the AIT–RAR–AKL flights justify it. Access is limited to Air New Zealand premium cabins and Koru Club; there’s no public day pass option advertised on-site.

Hours track Air New Zealand departures rather than a fixed 24-hour schedule, so the doors open ahead of the main jet departure wave and close once the last AIT–RAR service boards. If your ticket says Air New Zealand but you’re on a codeshare, check at check-in in T1 to confirm if your status unlocks lounge access.

Inside, expect a small self-serve buffet with roughly two sandwich options, two cheeses with crackers, nuts and dried apricots, plus two salads and a single hot dish when the main departure is near. Locals describe it as “small but adequate,” with enough snacks and light food to replace a quick meal at the barebones public terminal.

Drinks lean on the basics: self-pour soft drinks, juice, tea and coffee for the early island departures, and usually a modest alcoholic selection aligned to Air New Zealand’s standard lounge approach in the Cook Islands. If you’re picky, eat something in town in Aitutaki first, then use the lounge for top-up snacks and drinks only.

Two toilets with built-in showers sit at the back of the lounge, combining standard restroom fixtures with simple showerheads and basic amenities. Regulars time a quick rinse here after a humid day on Aitutaki before boarding direct from the lounge door onto the jet to Rarotonga or onward to Auckland.

It does get busy close to boarding, with both lounge rooms filling quickly once check-in opens for the Air New Zealand service, and seats becoming scarce about 30–45 minutes before scheduled departure. Locals recommend arriving at the airport slightly ahead of the crowd to claim a decent chair rather than ending up perched by the door.

Practical tip: aim to hit the lounge as soon as check-in opens, grab a shower first while it’s free, then sort food and drinks; by the time the boarding call hits, you’ll already be clean, fed and sitting near the lounge exit door to walk straight to the aircraft.
