Free city buses make this “service” more signboard than shop
Akureyri’s Public Bus Service point in the Main terminal is basically an information spot, not a ticket counter. City buses in Akureyri are free of charge, and the airport sits only a few kilometers from downtown, so there’s nothing to buy and usually nobody staffing a desk. Expect printed timetables, route maps for lines like A1–A6, and maybe a QR code pointing to the Straeto route planner.
Buses stop on the road just outside the Main terminal doors, and routes serving the airport typically run every 20–30 minutes during the day. The official Straeto site covers Akureyri’s network, but local info boards at the airport usually highlight the lines heading toward the city center and major stops along Route 1. Most people just walk out, check the stop sign, and hop on the next bus without any interaction inside.
Operating hours follow standard city service: daytime and early evening only, with fewer or no buses late at night and on Sundays; check the current timetable before relying on a 22:00–06:00 pickup. There are no card machines or sales kiosks tied to the Public Bus Service inside the Main terminal, because fares inside Akureyri’s city limits are set at ISK 0. If you’re connecting onward by intercity Straeto coach, that’s separate and usually booked online in advance.
Practical tip: before landing, screenshot the Akureyri bus map from straeto.is and look up the next departure time from “Akureyri Airport” to “Akureyri HOF” or the main downtown stops, so you can walk straight outside and onto the right free bus.
