Base access always starts at the Main Gate
For Joint Base Andrews (ADW), any taxi drop-off or pickup tied to the Passenger Terminal runs through the Main Gate on Allentown Road. If you or your driver don’t have DoD credentials or a vetted pass, you won’t get past the gate to the terminal itself.
Most DC-area taxi drivers know the “Joint Base Andrews Main Gate” landmark on their GPS, about 10–12 miles southeast of downtown Washington, D.C. Expect a 25–40 minute ride from the National Mall area in normal traffic, and closer to 45–60 minutes during I-95 or I-295 rush hours.
Every taxi using this option has to stop at the Main Gate visitor control point and follow current 316th Security Forces procedures. That can add 10–30 minutes to the trip during morning check-in waves, especially between 0600 and 0900 Monday through Friday.
If you hold a CAC, DoD ID, or have a base pass pre-approved through your sponsor, brief your taxi to continue to the Passenger Terminal building once cleared. The terminal itself sits inside the secured perimeter, several minutes’ drive past the Main Gate, so don’t plan to walk in from Allentown Road.
Non-credentialed passengers often have to meet their unit, sponsor, or shuttle at or just inside the Main Gate. Confirm in advance, by phone or email, exactly where your sponsor will link up with you and what time they’ll arrive; missing that by even 15 minutes can push you into the next show-time window.
Metered DC cabs and suburban operators usually start around a $3–4 flag drop, then add per-mile and per-minute charges, so a one-way run from central DC to the Main Gate can land in the $35–$60 range before tip. Ask your dispatcher up front if base access wait time at the gate counts on the meter.
Rideshare rules on military installations change fast; some drivers stop at the Main Gate and will not proceed inside even if you have a CAC. When you book, put “Joint Base Andrews Main Gate – Passenger Terminal access” in the pickup or drop-off notes so the driver knows it’s a controlled facility.
For early roll calls at the Passenger Terminal, pad your schedule by at least 60–90 minutes beyond the normal drive time to cover gate vetting, ID checks, and any last-minute taxi or sponsor hiccups.
Practical tip: before you call a cab, confirm the latest base access rules on the official Joint Base Andrews website or with your unit, then text those specifics to your driver so you’re aligned on where they can legally stop.
