45-minute ride in pickup truck shared taxis from ADV

Pickup truck shared taxis run from El Daein Airport (ADV) to the downtown area in about 45 minutes when traffic on the main road is normal. They operate from outside the Main terminal exit, usually lining up along the access road rather than at a marked rank, so you may need to walk 30–50 meters past the terminal doors to find a truck filling up.

These are local-style open or semi-open pickup trucks fitted with bench seats, not meter taxis, and fares are paid in cash only. Expect the driver to wait until there are at least 6–8 passengers in the back before departing, which can add extra time on top of the 45-minute drive. Share your destination as “city center” or name a known landmark so the driver understands you want the downtown drop-off.

Pricing is informal but usually fixed per seat for the airport–downtown run, with locals reporting a flat rate under the equivalent of US$5 per person. Ask the price before you climb into the truck and have small bills ready; drivers often do not have change for notes larger than the local equivalent of US$10. Pay at the end of the ride when you step off at the agreed stop.

Service is infrequent and tied to demand, with trucks sometimes leaving every 30 minutes during peak times and then going quiet for long stretches in the middle of the day. There is no official timetable, so during off-peak hours you could wait more than 45 minutes for a truck to fill. If several flights land close together, departures cluster and you will see trucks leaving in quick succession.

Space in the back is tight, and bags larger than about 20 kg or over standard checked-bag size may ride on the floor or be tied toward the tailgate. Secure your backpack or suitcase with a strap if you have one, and keep valuables in a small bag you can hold on your lap. These trucks usually do not have dedicated luggage racks or covered storage.

Practical tip: if you land after about 18:00, ask airport staff or another passenger how many more trucks are expected that evening before committing to wait; if they shrug or say “maybe one,” start thinking about arranging a private car on the spot instead of standing by for an unpredictable departure.
