25–30 minutes from ADB to Alsancak for about a dollar
The İzban Southern Line runs straight from Adnan Menderes Airport to the city, with daytime trains every 10–15 minutes and a fare in the roughly $0.50–1.50 band when you tap an İzmirim card. The station sits just beyond the airport parking area, linked to both the Domestic and International terminals by a signed walkway in a few minutes on foot.
Trains to town use the İZBAN stop named Adnan Menderes Havalimanı, and a direct ride to Alsancak typically takes around 25–30 minutes if you catch the right service. Not every Southern Line train runs that full distance; some short-turn at Cumaovası, so keep an eye on the electronic boards for trains heading toward Aliağa or at least Alsancak.
Fares sit in the local suburban band, paid with the stored-value İzmirim card that also works on İzmir Metro, trams, and buses, with one tap at the airport gates and an automatic distance calculation. For most visitors, airport–city comes out around the equivalent of $1 or less, far below typical ADB–Konak taxi quotes that land near 500–700 TRY in traffic.
Figure 10–15 minutes for the covered walk from International Arrivals, through the forecourt and across the parking area, into the İZBAN station concourse. Signage is mostly in Turkish, and several forum posts flag that there’s little English explaining when to change at Halkapınar for the İzmir Metro if you’re heading to Konak or the ferry piers.
Step-by-step: airport to Alsancak or Konak
- 1. Walk to the station: From either Domestic or International Arrivals, follow train/İZBAN signs across the car park to Adnan Menderes Havalimanı station; allow 5–10 minutes with luggage.
- 2. Sort your İzmirim card: Use the yellow machines in the station to buy or top up an İzmirim card with at least 50–60 TRY; bank cards don’t always work, so carry some cash.
- 3. Tap in at the gates: Hold the card to the reader at the turnstiles; the system logs an entry tap and opens the barrier, deducting the correct band when you exit in town.
- 4. Pick the right platform: Follow signs for trains toward Aliağa or Alsancak; ignore services clearly marked only to Cumaovası if you want to avoid an extra change.
- 5. Ride to your stop: For Alsancak hotels, stay on until Alsancak station, about 25–30 minutes from the airport. For Konak, get off at Halkapınar after roughly 20 minutes and follow the corridor to the İzmir Metro platforms signed “Fahrettin Altay.”
- 6. Tap out and connect: At Alsancak or Halkapınar, tap your İzmirim card at the exit gates, then switch to Metro, tram, or walk/taxi for the last 1–2 km to most central hotels.
What regulars do
Locals on TripAdvisor threads usually ride İZBAN only as far as Halkapınar, then jump to the Metro for Konak, saying the Metro trains feel less crowded and drop you nearer ferry and tram links. One frequent visitor even rides one stop in the opposite direction in rush hour, then boards the same train back toward the city to grab a seat and stash a suitcase before the airport crowd piles on.
Watch out for
Peak commuter slots around 08:00–09:00 and 17:00–19:00 see İZBAN cars packed, and several reports mention nowhere to park large 23 kg cases between ADB and Halkapınar. Also, some late-night arrivals miss the last useful trains toward town, which can be before midnight, and end up paying for a taxi after all.
One practical tip: if you land after 22:30, check the day’s last northbound İZBAN times on izban.com.tr before committing; if the gap looks tight, head straight to the station from Arrivals and skip any duty-free detours.
