Most flights into Achutupu run on to a lancha water taxi

At Achutupu Airport (ACU) on the Main airstrip, the last leg almost always happens by simple water taxi, called a lancha. These boats link the airstrip with nearby Guna Yala (San Blas) islands like Achutupu and Mamitupu in 5–25 minutes, depending on sea conditions and distance. There are no fixed timetables or ticket counters here, just small open boats and local skippers meeting the morning flights.

Boats wait at the shoreline a short walk from the Main runway, usually within 100–300 meters of where you step off the aircraft. Expect wooden or fiberglass lanchas with outboard engines, not covered ferries, and basic wooden benches instead of proper seats. Most skippers run at least one trip for each scheduled flight arrival, especially the early-morning runs from Panama City’s domestic airports.

Prices are typically quoted per person in cash, often in the USD 5–15 range for short hops between the airstrip and nearby islands. There is no card machine and no ATM at ACU, so bring small US dollar bills, ideally a few 5s and 1s. Payment usually happens before boarding, straight to the boat operator, with no printed ticket or receipt.

There is no formal timetable; boats leave once the group from a given flight or 4x4 drop-off is ready. If your flight lands late, build in at least 30–60 minutes of slack in case the original lancha leaves to handle another run first. In rough seas, some skippers wait 10–20 minutes for conditions to calm, and rides can stretch past 30 minutes to more distant islands.

Luggage rides in the boat with you, often stacked near the bow, so keep electronics in a dry bag or at least a plastic liner. Spray is common at speeds above 15–20 knots, especially on afternoon trips when winds pick up. Most boats have one lifejacket per passenger, but gear can be worn and sizing is hit-or-miss, so clip and tighten it yourself before departure.

Heading back to ACU, island hosts or local fixers usually line up your return water taxi to meet a specific morning flight time. Confirm the exact boat departure at least 12–24 hours before, and aim to leave your island 45–60 minutes before check-in cut-off so a surprise squall or engine hiccup doesn’t cost you your plane seat.

One tip: bring a dry bag and a lightweight rain jacket; on a windy day, that 10-minute hop to or from Achutupu airstrip can leave both you and your backpack soaked.
