200–400 LKR gets you a quick hop in a tuk tuk

Tuk tuks in Anuradhapura work well for short trips between the airport, guesthouses, and the Old/New Town. Anuradhapura Airport (ACJ) sits a few kilometres from town, so you’ll usually flag a tuk tuk on the main road outside the Main terminal or ask your guesthouse to call one. Rides inside town limits often land in the 200–400 LKR range, with airport runs usually higher depending on distance and haggling.

Most tuk tuks run 06:00–21:00 around Anuradhapura, with the busiest hours roughly 08:00–18:00 on main roads like Mihintale Road and along the Old Town approach. There’s no formal rank at the Main terminal, so if you don’t see a tuk tuk right outside, walk 200–300 meters to the nearest junction and you’ll usually spot one. At night after 21:00, expect to wait longer or pay extra.

For temple runs, tuk tuks work best for connecting scattered sites over 3–10 km, such as between the Old Town stupas and newer guesthouse strips east of town. Drivers commonly quote a flat price for half-day circuits (3–4 hours) instead of per-ride fares; you might hear numbers like 1,500–3,000 LKR depending on stops and distance. Agree in advance which sites are covered, especially if you want to include far spots like Mihintale, about 13 km away.

There’s no meter in most Anuradhapura tuk tuks, so every ride is a negotiation. As a rough guide, locals often talk in increments of 50–100 LKR per few kilometres, but airport pickups can push that higher. Have small notes ready: 100, 200, and 500 LKR bills make settling a 250–400 LKR fare simpler than handing over a 5,000 LKR note. If a driver suggests a “full day” price, ask how many hours and kilometres are included, and compare that with doing 3–4 single rides instead.

Inside town, tuk tuks share the road with buses, so a 3 km ride can swing between 5 and 15 minutes depending on traffic near busy spots like the New Town market. In rain, plastic side covers come down and visibility drops, which can slow you another 5–10 minutes. If you have a flight from ACJ at a set time, add 15–20 minutes padding to the usual town–airport ride, especially in the 07:00–09:00 morning window.

  • Practical tip: Before you sit down, say your destination, confirm the price in Sri Lankan rupees, and repeat it once more; misheard “fifty” versus “fifteen” becomes a problem only at the end of a 10 km ride.
