Hot breakfast and a real bar at Gate 1 in T1

At Aberdeen T1, near Gate 1, Northern Lights Lounge is the spot people pick when they want actual hot food instead of the BA lounge’s soup-and-sandwich setup. Regulars call it “better than expected for a small airport,” with cooked breakfast options early and a proper bar that includes free house beer and wine.

The lounge runs mainly breakfast and early evening hours, so don’t bank on a late-night visit. Priority Pass and paid day passes get you in, and staff tend to stick to the 3-hour stay rule, especially if your flight is heavily delayed. Several reviewers mention being asked to come back closer to departure, so factor that into your timing.

Food is the main reason to choose Northern Lights over sitting in the terminal. Offshore workers talk about using it for a full breakfast plate and decent coffee before short domestic hops, and evening visits often see a hot main and sides. Mid-afternoon, reviews say the buffet can slide to “snacks and what’s left,” so the safest bets are early morning and the early evening meal window.

The bar setup is straightforward: house beer and wine are included, but spirits cost extra, which catches some guests off guard. Several reviewers complain about paying again for whisky after an entry fee that already feels premium for ABZ. If you want a couple of pints before a 45-minute hop to London or Manchester, value is fine; if you’re planning doubles of single malt, it adds up fast.

Seating is where it can beat the BA lounge for comfort. Travellers on FlyerTalk mention preferring the cushioned window seats here over BA’s harder designer chairs, and those window spots also give you apron views. Power sockets are not at every seat, though, so anyone working on a laptop usually grabs the wall seats or high-tops where outlets are clustered.

Capacity is the weak point. Reviews say it “gets rammed” during early offshore waves around 06:00–07:30, with people sometimes turned away at the door. Lighting, TV volume and crowd levels mean it’s not a quiet space at 6 am, and food can run out before staff refresh it during those peaks, especially on Mondays.

Regulars time their visit after the first offshore rush, roughly after 07:30–08:00 or around mid-day, then head straight for a window seat with a plug. One practical tip: if you arrive at ABZ around 06:30, grab a quick coffee landside, clear security, and aim to enter the lounge closer to 07:45 to dodge the worst of the queues and still get hot food.
