Line 6 of SOTRA

Bus

Bus 30-40 min 200 FCFA

200 FCFA gets you into Abidjan with SOTRA Line 6

Line 6 of SOTRA is the rock-bottom option out of Félix-Houphouët-Boigny International (T1/T2), at about 200 FCFA for a 30–40 minute ride into town if traffic cooperates. It’s a regular city bus, not an airport coach, so think standing room, no A/C, and locals commuting rather than travelers with roller bags.

The bus doesn’t usually load right at the terminal forecourt of ABJ; most reports say you walk out toward the main road in Port-Bouët and pick it up at a standard SOTRA stop there. A Reddit user described the airport-area SOTRA buses as “really cheap but packed and confusing if you don’t speak French,” and they only used it because a local colleague showed them exactly where to wait.

Schedules are loose. A Francophone expat on an Abidjan forum said “les bus SOTRA passent devant l’aéroport mais les horaires changent tout le temps, il faut demander aux contrôleurs,” so expect changing times and ask staff on the ground. Buses tend to run more often at weekday rush hours and thin out at night, with some lines winding down by early evening even though that isn’t posted anywhere obvious.

Regular commuters often pair a short orange taxi hop from the terminal to a bus hub in Port-Bouët or toward Vridi, then switch to SOTRA Line 6 there for the 200 FCFA segment into Plateau or beyond. This avoids hunting for the “right” stop immediately outside ABJ, which many expats say is the hardest part because route maps and live timetables for SOTRA are rarely up to date online.

Space is tight on these green-and-white buses: there’s no luggage rack, people stand in the aisles, and expats warn that big suitcases are a problem both for movement and for pickpocket risk. Regulars stick to backpacks or small duffels they can keep in front of them for the 30–40 minute ride, especially during morning and evening rush into Cocody and Plateau.

How to ride Line 6 from ABJ, step by step:

  • 1. Land at T1 or T2 and clear immigration and customs; count on 30–60 minutes if several widebodies arrive together.
  • 2. Exit the terminal and either walk toward the main road into Port-Bouët or take a short metered taxi (agree a price in FCFA before you get in, usually under 2,000 FCFA for the short hop).
  • 3. At the SOTRA stop, ask a controller or driver specifically for “Ligne 6” and confirm the direction toward your district (for example Plateau or Cocody); don’t rely on printed signs alone.
  • 4. Board through the front or middle door, keep your 200 FCFA in small bills, and pay the conductor or driver when asked; fares are usually collected after departure.
  • 5. Move away from the doors, keep your bag in front of you, and expect a hot, crowded 30–40 minute ride depending on traffic along the lagoon and bridges.
  • 6. Watch for your stop or ask a fellow passenger to call it out; many stops are not clearly signed, and missing one can add 10–15 minutes of backtracking.

One last tip: if you land after 19:00, assume Line 6 might be sporadic and have a taxi backup plan rather than standing at a dark stop with luggage and no clear timetable.
